Dumb question time from Canadian collector.
I was looking on cointrackers and they estimate its value from 5 cents to $440.00 in ms++ condition .Why such a high estimate for this nickel in ms++ condition? What am I missing?

Dunno. Sounds screwy. NumisMedia says 6 cents in lower grades to 22 cents in MS60.

Sounds like they misplaced the decimal point.

Common coins in uncommonly high grades still demand a lot of money. The top of pop coin is probably that one or higher...

Most modern coins are minted in such high volume that quality is pretty low. So finding a high grade piece is special, if the highest grade coins are known to be in the 66 or 67 range and your find a high 68, you have something of genuine value. Most modern coins wouldn't break 64 or 65.

The '76-D typically comes pretty nice compared to most nickels of the era but fully struck and pristine coins are still rare. A superb Gem '76-D nickel can be spectacular and will look much nicer than a superb Gem '69-D nickel but it's still rare. This date comes with PL obverses and full six step reverses. A coin without serious flaws of one sort or another is difficult to locate with most moderns.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

It's probably the result of an algorithm they used to estimate coin values without having to enter all data manually, as is done for sources like the RedBook. They take the highest price realized, then the face value, and distribute the difference over an exponential or logarithmic curve. I saw a few that stated all '83 quarters to be worth $3 in VF and $8 in AU because of the rarity of gems for that year. The lazier your math is, the stranger and more inaccurate the estimates will be.

Thanks everyone, the reason I asked is that I have a few of them and I did not know if I hit the jackpot or not. Just finding it hard to believe that the coin was worth that much in a slab when any of the similar years are not close to that number.

Simply because cointrackers is a bunch of cow poop. They are very unreliable.
