Fellow CCF members. I need to get a good idea as to whether this one is closer to XF40 or 45. Also do you think it would be advisable to clean it up and preserve it with some verdicare or leave it as is?

I would definitely suggest giving it an acetone bath to get that gunk off the back side.

panzaldi,
Have you cleaned coins before? Be careful. Acetone first with caution.

I have used verdicare for several of my coppers with good results. I have never used acetone

you can read up on proper methods by searching acetone. precautions, use in an open area with good airflow, and make sure to use 100% acetone, and not something like nail polish remover

Technical grade appears 40 to me. I'd leave the black gunk on the reverse because what's underneath could be scary.

Agree XF40. Acetone first, using a q-tip, can't get into trouble there. To me the dark areas look more like gunk build-up rather than verdigris. If you feel the least hesitant, the coin is too valuable to take a chance with - let a professional do it.
Rest in Peace

True, but I would think that the op bought this for his own collection. Not a flip job. Either way, I would love to have one preserved or not.

I thought that too when I first looked at the coin but, maybe with a clearer pic?

Since there isn't really any verdigris I wouldn't use verdicare. I would take a q-tip dabbed in acetone and lightly apply to the gunk on the back to see if it comes off easy. If not, just let it be.

With a coin of that value I'd send it to NGC for conservation.

Closer to EF40. I'd probably leave it as is. That being said, if it were my coin, since it's details anyway, I "might" try a little Verdicare spot treatment on some of the reverse crud to see what's underneath. Would probably not try the acetone.

EF-40 details, due to the scratches on reverse.
