Here is a strange one that was in the bulk swap. About the size of a standard tool check or quarter. Looks to be heavily blackened brass, with hand stamped letters and numbers, non magnetic and the thickness of a quarter. Have no idea what it is supposed to be. Or why somebody would fake it? Any ideas?

Take it to a museum and see what they say.

Quote: Who says it's fake? I was wondering why somebody would fake something that has no real easily attributable origin or use. The letter stamps are an exact match to a set or two that I own, and most of the letter stamps are not as plain of fonts on the others counterstamped coins and tokens. Being deep in Yankee territory none of the local museums have much knowledge on the CSA. or are all volunteers. Probably will be something for the whatitz box. Will have to google CSA for collectors forums, and see if they can come up with anything.

I know Phil, but in the past I have messages on assorted forums about items could be "Genuwine" I know enough that a General might just have a little better quality of tag even if it was a chamber pot

Yes you are right about it being a copper I dipped it and it is copper but even with my digital microscope can't see anything between the N and 6 but space Your eyes must be better than mine. If the matron is looking left I think I can see some of the outline of the neck.

Yes, it is a matron, I dug it up myself and my dad decided to whiz it, that is why you see it all shiny! It originally was dirty and green as with all old corroded copper pieces.

If it were mine, I would call the curator at a confederate museum and describe to him what you have and tell him you would like to email him some pics for his evaluation. I do it often & Most curators love to help, just don't ask them about money at all. They hate that
*possibly try "The Museum of the Confederacy" in Richmond
