I need help with this clip please. I purchased it as a "strike clip" but I don't really know. I took a chance on this one in the lot of 20 error coins that I recently purchased. I can't say it is a strike clip because I don't know anything about them. But I do know that on regular clips, the larger clips may not show the same properties such as Blakesley effect or the clip may be warped. Part of the reason I take a chance on some of these coins is that I love the debates it creates right here on CCF! Sooooo....opinions please!

the edges dont look right to me, the should be tapered, and these show no signs. I would wager this is a garage job.
but I will wait to see one of the experts add their 2 cents.

Most definitely legit with two clips of different sizes, not a "strike clip" and an awesome coin!! I have a similar one, from 1980. Look closely, It _does_ have Blakesley effects on both clips - examine the obverse and opposite of the small piece between the clips (2 o'clock and 8 o'clock)... also 4 o'clock and 10 o'clock on the obverse.

I don't think strike clips would have a blakesly so.......this si toiugh, I have no experience with strike clips AT ALL, I don't know what to say but nothing screams hand done accept for the scraping on the leaf. I will sit this out for now and wait for the big brains on this stuff to comment. it is kind of hard to believe it was strike clipped with such a large amount twice though...

Wait, a strike clip? Canada is so weird. Can someone add strike clip to my mental numismatic library?

You won't with clips this large...

It seems like the larger the clip the more it would taper.

Thanks everyone. It's definitely the largest double clip I have in my collection.
Correct me if I am wrong but when a clip gets this large and there is a substantial loss of mass of the planchet, the strike will be stronger right to the edge of the clip. Plus the clip may be slightly warped. On most smaller clips you tend to see the weakening and tapering towards the edges of the clip.
This coin will be a nice addition and a good comparison coin for future reference.
Cheers.
