Hello! This is officially my first post. I hope its correct and in the right spot! I inherited my mom's coin collection and for the past 11 years, it has sat in my closet. Recently, I thought I would try and establish it's value and I started down the rabbit hole of coin collecting. I myself have saved pennies for 15 years. I want to cash them in and thought it would suffice to just remove all the wheat backs. Boy, was I wrong. For the past few weeks I have been painstakingly going through thousands of pennies looking for rare ones. I then ran into this 1980 coin that looks a bit different. I'm hoping I have found a DDO, so I can tell my husband I am not crazy! Thank you in advance for your thoughts        |

It is different, so you are not crazy but it's not a doubled die . It has seen a rough life and the devices are flattened and broadened.

It did look that way, but I wasn't for sure and thought I should show the experts. I have about 20,000 more pennies to go through so hopeful I will have more to post. Thanks for your reply!

Nope. Not Die Deterioration. Looks like it was flattened down, by what? We don't know. |

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. If it pleases you, put it in a 2x2 holder (inexpensive packs available at your local coin shop} to protect it. Do not clean or wipe it.

Looks to me like the 1980 was hammered with something, it's PSD. |

I agree. I was hoping it was a flattened DDO though. Oh well. I think I'm on the right track anyways. It will be fun to finally go through my moms collection and see what she has. I will save this cent in a little card, CoinMasters. Thank you for the suggestion. |

kakaratt77. die deterioration. If it pertains to the die, then the event is a die anomaly.

I see now cwb, the dryer acts like a tumbler and flattens the details. Good to know!
