My eyes almost certainly deceive me, but I see 1864.
I think I need an electron microscope to be sure.

I think an acoustic microscope would be a better tool for the job, these have been shown to be very effective at nondestructively reading dates from such coins.

The 3rd digit seems really weird, cannot be a 7. I'd guess it's 18_7

There's no such thing as 1856...
(Not to sidetrack too much, but SilverStackerKid, I dig the new avatar!)

It might be 1876 as the appears to be a curvature on the last number.

It's 1875 and I'm pretty sure the seller knows it. He just put 1877 in the title to attract attention. Seems to specialize in problem coins.

Again - don't mean to hijack, but... Once you get in to copper, it'll be easy to remember! 1856 was the year of the special release Flying Eagle cent, and 1857 was the first year of small cents in circulation. They were out alongside Braided Hair Large Cents for only that year, then in 1858 just FECs, then 1859 was the first year of the IHC (single year type because of the reverse). Once you have your short set of circulating FEC's (1857, 1858 - you can get both Large and Small Letters varieties if you're ambitious) it'll be to remember when those IHCs came! Oh, and for what it's worth, I do NOT think it's a crap coin, I think it's a great hole filler for 1875 or 1876. Nice surfaces, just honest wear. Works for me!

If you need this as a hole filler for 1875 or 1876, then you might want to collect a different series.
