Hi old mates Been a while. I am still collecting albeit quietly.

I've made some pick ups along the way. Here is what I felt was a great deal for a semi-key date in very decent condition. Of course the spot on the obverse makes this less appealing to some and maybe even hurt some technical points on the grade but in this grade level this is seldom seen and I think it was a steal to own at $175.

A2/G102/F102 This is the first pairing of Obverse 2 (the date has shifted and the 18(4)8 touches the base of the rock) and Reverse B. Reverse B is significant because Reverse A had actually been a leftover from 1847 and was paired with Obverse 1 in 1848 until it cracked. So this is the first instance of the "first 1848 Reverse".

I have a soft "spot" for dimes. She is amazing. My eye always goes to 3 places. Her face, the shield & the ribbon. All beautiful on this example. I honestly don't mind the spot one bit.

Beautiful dime

Personally I think it has good eye appeal obverse notwithstanding the one area (carbon spot?)

Thanks for sharing this. I don't want to be a nay-sayer, but this does not look AU to me. The entire obverse seems to show evident wear that is not strike-related, given the sharpness of the stars.

Anyone else agree?

I think it's a touch overgraded. I'd call it AU-50 and no better. My knowledge of Seated dimes does not quite extend to die pairings, so I don't exactly grasp the significance of this one, but it's a nice coin nonetheless.

Honestly, I think Die marriages and the like are only significant to the beholder and the variety hound of any given series. The die pairing and the introduction of Obverse 2 on this issue are useless for the coin's value unless a variety hound is buying it and wants the specific example.

Buy the coin, not the slab. I can tell you that there is significant luster and it makes AU. Now, 53 versus 50 versus 55, well those technicalities are what makes looking at coins and getting good at what we respectively see so much fun!

Germanics, great to see you my friend. I trust all is well on your side of the pond.

I think the grade is spot on. The first thing that came to mind, even before I saw the holder, was AU-53.

Nice semi-key date!
