I just saw this auction on ebay, and I am shocked!
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1957-D-LINC...em2ee3767dc5

I have seen these sell before and have watched the prices, even minor doubling can bring a couple of bucks.
Is there a new market for these with the new generation of collectors?

That is the strongest I have ever seen. I don't think I would pay that much. I am pretty sure when it gets that extreme that it is slightly collectible.

I've seen them with strong doubling like that. I still have some around in a box somewhere. Maybe it's time to dig them out!

Don't forget, it's shiny too!

Agreed, it is shocking. At least the seller listed the coin as Machine Doubling and didn't try to fool anyone. And it seems to have started at $0.99 with multiple bidders. If someone wants to pay $40 on a pretty penny knowing all well what it is that's their choice and our reward

It is a curious phenomenon. I suspect that folks buying these aren't familiR with MD. They can't claim to be duped since lister notes MD and appropriately established a modest price for it ($.99?). I've seen nickels from the past 15 years or so with MD listed as actual 'doubled die' and 'rare' listed at the bay. I suspect the listers don't know that MD is damage. I've contacted a couple listers to inform and they pulled the posting down.

But it is crazy what folks are buying and the prices they pay. I feel if you list a MD coin as such and it is an interesting specimen then collecting a premium is fair. I wouldn't do it but others might.

Wow-Wow-Wow. I hope the buyer is happy. It is a nice MD,I would keep it if I found it CRHing.I wouldn't even think it had a collector value. I know that the Canadian market kinda likes them though on Canadian coins that is.

With this being the case, it is hard to tell how much money I have tossed back into circulation.

It's shiny and appears to have a little rotation going on as well.

I'm with John1 on this. I'd keep it if I found it but I wouldn't buy it.

Wow, I have at least a few LWC's with this degree of MD on them. Looks like its time to open up the ebay store again, even though I despise ebay as a seller. Love it as a buyer though.

This is simply incredible and totally unexpected:...another source of uncharted and fortuitous income...

Gosh, I've pitched so many of these things in the exclusive pursuit of DDOs and DDRs.

Well, as they say, "live and learn" is the phrase of the day.

How would you feel if you paid that much for a coin and later found out it was not what you thought it was? That is why I wouldn't sell them.

The seller clearly stated what he was selling, and I think the buyer knew what he was buying.
I think new collectors want these types of errors and are willing to pay for them. Collectors set the prices for all coins, maybe this is a new market.

Yeah the seller clearly listed it. If people want to pay that much for something then that is up to them. I have a few extreme MD. Examples I have kept I thin I might put them up as well and see what they get. I got told on here they are worthless haha. And no they didn't say no premium for those of use that try to cover other people. haha they said worthless. Glad I kept them even $10 for one will be a good fetch for something worthless.

I do agree with Coop about selling them to buyers who think they are getting something better than what it is.
There are too many crooks on ebay, and many list this error as a doubled die, which is a lie.
Honesty goes a long way!
