We could attepmt to identify the date if we had better photos of Lincolns bust. I believe post 1918 cents had "VDB" on the bust

I appreciate the help. I'm not a coin guy at all but my father in law was showing me some coins. This one was just off to the side but caught my eye. He said he found it in circulation years ago and hasn't looked into it. I was attempting to find out if it was normal occurence or if there was anyway to find out a date. I'll try to convince him to take it to one of the coin shops he goes to so they can look at it in person. Thanks again to all who have looked. Your community is very friendly and if I ever catch the itch to collect coins, I'll definitely find my way back here.

Coin is damaged. The indents were added to the coin with possible straight pin/bobby pin? The date looks like it was scrapped off. Why? Trying to create an error?
