Hehe, I got four in 3 days..... :D Gx, I'll post a scan comparison... Going to edit this post later.. ok heres the comparison... http://img135.imageshack.us/my.php?...21202zr0.pngBig Head is on the left... AUSTRALIA doesn't have a flat A, and the word are much closer to the rim of the coin... Also, the tip of the crown is relatively closer as compared to the small head.. Hope this helps... After a while of looking at them, it will be quite obvious.. It helps working at Maccas... :DD

I did $200 and found my first Norfolk Island 20 Cent. There were also 2 x NSW, 1 x QLD, SA, Vic and Tassie. No big heads. A few Cuds. There is always next week

G'day & thankyou for the pics. Now, some questions: forgive me for going all the way back to basics -
Am I correct in thinking that the big head variety of 20-cent is less common than the small head of 2004 ?
however, the big head 2004 is, apart from the date, identical with the obverse used in the years upto & including 2003; and also with the obverses of 2005, 2006, and 2007 ? So, the small head is a one-year type ?
Is this correct: the small head always has flat As, and the large head always has pointed As ?
anything else I've missed ?

Yup you're right there Peter.... and also, the words are closer to the rim on the big head, plus the tip of the crown is closer to the rim on the big head too.... :)

I simply look for the pointed 'A's. If there are varieties without pointed 'A's then..... DOH!

[b]So, the small head is a one-year type?[b] Yes Peter, RAM was experimenting with their new computerised coining machinery and laser scanning technology. This resulted in the smaller obverse coins as opposed to the traditional obverses. However production was already underway when this new tech was introduced, resulting in a number of the old tech (Large head) coins being circulated( approx 400 000 20 cent) but no 50 cent large apparently. All mint sets have the old tech(large head) for both 20 cent and 50 cent, and there is a 50/50 split of technologies in the proof sets. Another interesting point is in the proof sets, some are mixed technologies IE large 50 cent, small 20 cent and visa verse. They must not have been happy with the results as they went back to the old tech for all subsequent years to date.

Varieties in the combinations of types of IRB & SD are supposed to exist with the small head type, but I haven't seen any. Too complicated to figure out, so I simply haven't bothered with them. There are some common errors that occur with the small head.
