Hello, I was hoping for some info on a coin or token my wife brought home. She works in a bank and is always bringing home interesting things. Today she brought home something I find to be quite awesome! It is probably a fake but still if anyone has any info I would be very thankful. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by Tone Starx 07/21/2015 4:21 pm

I'm fairly certain it is Byzantine, but hopefully one of the experts in that area will weigh in. Looks original to me.

Thank you for the info. That at least gives me a start on where to do some research. I have noticed that there hasn't been a ton of replies. Is this something that is very rare and not much known about it.

May be referencing a follis of Romanus IV (1068 - 1071). There are some Byzantine authorities over on the Ancients board...I'd recommend reposting there.

It's definitely a Byzantine follis, with Jesus on one side and Mary on the other. It appears genuine to me. I'll move your thread over to the Ancients subforum for you.

to the community This is a Class G Anonymous follis attributed to Romanus IV, 1068-1071 AD. Sear # 1867. It's a nice original coin.

Thank you very much! Do you mind explaining what sear # 1867 means? Also, I hate to ask this but is this coin worth anything?

The Sear number is a citation/attribution of the coin, based on the work of numismatist David R. Sear (I am assuming from his "Byzantine Coins and Their Values"). There are several of the Romanus IV Class G's listed at Vcoins.com that you can compare for $$. Seems like in exceptional condition they might go for close to $200, like this one from CNG: http://cngcoins.com/Coin.aspx?CoinID=155760But most are considerably cheaper. This one seems to be in a comparable state to yours: http://www.vcoins.com/en/stores/pra...Default.aspx

"Sear" is David Sear, who has written price guides for ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine coins. in this case, "Sear #1867" is the catalogue reference number in his "Byzantine coins and their values" book. Click on this Wildwinds page and scroll down to the ones labelled "SB 1867" to see a couple of other coins like yours. One of those is a donated pic from a private collection, the other is from an auction where it sold for $50. These coins were frequently overstruck on top of older coins. Yours is interesting in that it clearly has some remnants of the older coin still visible: if you look at side depicting Mary (your top pic), you can see another halo above and outside of the one Mary is supposed to have; this is actually the halo of Jesus from the coin's previous life as a Class A - type follis. There's also remnants of the lettering hidden amongst the "border of dots". I'm not sure what all this does to the value, but your coin certainly is not worthless.

You guys have all been very helpful! Thank you so much. I am not a coin collector but my wife is. Her and her father have been collecting since she was a baby. About two years ago someone broke into our house and stole every coin she had. What made it worse is that it had to be someone we know. Anyway, this was devastating to her. All her memories with her dad and grandma stolen. So finding this has been really awesome for her. I am so happy that there was a community out there that could help identity and explain what it is.
Thank you again.
