Perth Mint - For such a young nation, Australia is responsible for some seriously sought-after coins. The 1813 holey dollar & dump and the 1930 penny are two of our most desirable rarities. With an equally illustrious status in Australian numismatics, the 1920 Sydney sovereign is another legendary collectable.

Portraying Pistrucci's famous St George design with a 'S' mintmark in the exergue (above the year-date), only three examples of the 1920 Sydney sovereign are known to exist in private hands. It's Australia's rarest collectable gold coin and, unsurprisingly, commands a price tag to suit!

£650,000 was needed to secure one of these elusive treasures when it came to auction in London in 2012. A new world-record price for any Australian or Commonwealth coin, the A$1million sum procured it on behalf of a determined Australian collector.

It's a pure pleasure to gaze upon the 1920 Sydney sovereign in these exquisite images courtesy of rare coin dealer Jaggard's. In providing one of just three possible opportunities to achieve a complete series of sovereigns made at Australia's mints between 1855 and 1931, its significance cannot possibly be overstated.

The 1920S sovereign is a very high profile coin.
However it is not Australia's rarest collectable gold coin
There are other Aussie gold coins that are rarer.

Don't forget the 1855 half sov - another true rarity.

Don't just go by press releases young fella, Do some research.
The Sydney minted 5 pound coin 1887 and 1902 coins have a known population of 3 each and I recon they would be far more valuable than a lousy sovereign with the same mintage figures "If they ever become available"

Shall I be clever and suggest that the 1927M sovereign is the rarest of them all.

Maybe. I would have thought there'd be a lot more interested sovereign collectors than there are 2 pound/5 pound collectors.

Well it might be anyway.

As far as business strikes go, the 1920s sov and 1893m old head half sovs are the scarcest with 2 and 3 examples available to collectors respectively. Note the sov has a specimen known (pictured) and the half sov has a proof, plus there's another sov and two halves in the RAM collection and another two proof halves in the Museum of Victoria.
