ray or anyone know the distance form the lens mount to the sensor. I am looking for that distance. I have been following and another forum on the net. one of the member there has built a lens form parts of other lens. the camera is a sony nex. the images are mind blowing. the detail is unbelievable in the photos. I would like to try to do the same as some of the other members are doing as well. they are all going with this camera that matches his. I would like to stick with the ones I have any help would be greatly appreciated. if this lens works I will describe how I built it following there direction. ray if you don't mind. I will need your help a little later with a couple of things. if you don't mind because I know you know exactly what they are talking about. I understand it some what again thank you

well update the site that was doing this study has been hacked. no one can get in anymore. I have memorized most of the information there. I don't think one can use this type of a lens setup on a canon or Nikon. do to the distance from. the lens mounting plate to the sensor. I am still going to try to complete this lens. I have more pieces coming. as soon as I get them I will construct the lens. one of the photos they measured the magnification on the lens. it was 2 to 1 mag. the other thread that was tried to the original thread was from Russia. that site no longer exists as well. I wish I had spend more time in the Russian thread. there are a lot of lens in Russia that are very good. but like I said these threads for what ever reason no longer exist. I will finish what I started. if I can make it work with some assistance from ray. I will probably have to purchase one of the camera they was using or try to borrow one. so there is where I am at with this lens

ray question the back of the lens to the sensor is 34.5mm when not extended. when the lens is extended the distance form the sensor is 44.5 mm the lens then will focus at 40cm. I should be able to use this on the canon and Nikon. I am thinking that is the distance from the sensor on these camera not extended. would that be right in saying. I am hoping to be able to focus a little closer. but if I have to I will build amount. that I will set the camera and lens back that far from the coins. I hope you don't mind but. I want to try this. if I can not get it to focus is there some way ray. I can just email you with what is going on and maybe you can help me put this together. I have little Nikon so I will be able to take pictures and show you. maybe with your help I can make this work. your help would be greatly appreciated

well went across the boarder yesterday. I picked up the last pieces for the lens . I need one more piece from china. going to build it so that it mounts by m42. that piece should be here in the next 3 weeks. last night worked until 2 am putting it all together except for the mount. looks good I will be glad when the rest gets here just have to drill and tap the base. install the mount that way I will be able to attach it to Nikon and canon. once I try it again so I don't have to hand hold and focus it. I will post pictures to show the results. have a great one

thank you ray. I can tell you from this experience. I have learned a lot about lens. I know that some of the stuff that was written on that link could not have been right. I say that because I purchased one of the camera for the mount and I measured the lens to film distance. the distance is 47mm. when the lens is set forward it compete travel takes the lens to 54mm. the link stated 34mm with the camera helicoid closed and 41mm extended, that got me worried but I double checked that to be sure on the old camera.so this setup should work on Nikon and canon. I have the information you gave me earlier. well that above image was taken using only part of the lens and a cellphone camera holding them together.so with a complete lens. I am hoping to get a good clear shot with the camera and great depth of field. we will see. I wish the link had been left alone. it would have been great to have you read that link. because you could have helped us to understand a lot of what was said there. plus I believe you would know . if this would work or not. I think its going to. the only thing I am not sure of is if. I can get the same results. when I seen that images that was posted there ray. I was shocked to see that much clarity thank you ray

Would really like to check out that info.
It sounds like what you're trying to do based on info from that site is to use a partial lens (front lens group?) as an auxiliary objective on a cellphone camera, correct? I expect this may work with some combinations but is probably very hit or miss. Reason is that partial lenses are rarely well-corrected for distortion or chromatic aberrations. Lens designers use all elements of a lens to do the corrections. Using only part of the lens is asking for trouble!
You might try using an enlarger lens like a 50mm EL-Nikkor instead of the partial lens. The EL-Nikkor is fully-corrected and should give a better result than a partial lens (in general). I've anecdotally heard that the Tominon 50mm is a symmetric design, so will likely do well around 1:1. I have one but have not tried it at low mags yet.
When using a full lens like the EL-Nikkor in front of another full lens like that in a cellphone camera, you generally set the camera lens to infinity, and the magnification is set by the ratio of the focal lengths. This is called "lens stacking" and is covered in many references. What you're doing with partial lenses is creating a completely new lens structure, and using the camera to focus this structure. Distance between the lenses becomes very important and is very likely the variable (maybe not discussed by those who wrote the article) that makes or breaks a particular combination. When doing lens stacking at infinity focus, the distance between the lenses is not so important because the rays are running parallel. This makes it a bit easier to set up stacked lenses, since you don't have to be careful of spacings.

ray yes you are right. but I am going to complete the lens. I only wanted to try the forward part to see what I would get. the image above is the result from the front glass and my cellphone. so if it does not preform well on my camera. I will build a mount and use it with my cell phone. see there was a link talking about building lens. so I started to read that link the more I read the more I was impressed. finally another person in Russia came on and stated adding his knowledge to the thread. the images coins was mind blowing. I never got to read to much on the Russian thread. but I would have liked to. this site got hacked everything gone. its a shame there was so much there. I know if you had read it you could have helped us with it or maybe you would say yes this is good but this is better. see I know you understand this stuff. I wish you could have read the thread and seen there work. I need one more piece. when it gets here I will make the mount and I will fire the lens up on the Nikon and canon, if it works I will tell you how I did it. this is all coming from my memory of what I read. I hope you will help if it works to make it possibly work better or back to the drawing board or say well it was a good effort. have a great one thank you ray for sharing. ray I found another thread. if I can find it again. I will share it with you and all the members here. if you want a laugh if I find this link again you will not believe what has been written about a coin imaging forum. what they are saying. I think it is this forum. I am not sure. but as I read the information it made me laugh. what they are talking about is this group and the treatment of canon and Nikon camera. one word and there are lots of work. I laughed they said it is barbaric. what these people are doing with them canon and Nikon camera. another person said my god what next. I got the greats laugh about that. if I find the link again. it will make you laugh at there words, I was thinking its a camera a tool. have a great one

I would like to read your thoughts on this application. thank you ray.... Isco Close Up Macro lens 70mm 14Diopter Olympus EM5 Testd Samples Seiko 6138 325 this is on ebay now. rocky...seems like each of the things you're trying to do adds more glass in the optical path. But it's best to minimize the amount of glass if possible. Adding closeup lenses in front of other lenses is definitely not the best way to go for resolution and sharpness. Best is to figure out what single lens works best at the magnification you are targeting.
