Well the auction ended a couple of hours ago, I came away with 3 new additions to my numismatic library, though I was bidding on 7.

Picked up a pretty rare Bowers & Hathaway newsletter, #8 or #10 in the Rare Coin Review series, a hardbound copy of K&F's Dennis Mendelson's library catalog and something I've never seen before, an early competitor to the Red Book, and Wyatt Raymond's guide - Stack's "Numismatics Guide" from 1941, looks interesting, as I only saw it as the bids were progressing live, I had no intention of bidding from studying the catalog over the past 2 weeks, but took a chance on it. Never seen one like it before. (It was lot #291 in the July 25th online sale).

The lots I missed out on I found one cheaper from an online book dealer and saved almost $75.00, the other lots I wanted, went for more than I was willing to spend. Would have loved the complete Lester Merkin Catalog set and the long run of New Netherlands catalogs but they were both over my budget this month. As I also had several wins in the Fred Lake auction earlier this week.

So far fred has been a super guy to deal with, I sent in my references to be able to participate in his auctions rather than pay 25% up front, he approved me as my references with other book dealers this past year is pretty good (I spent more on books than coins).

I download the catalog in pdf format well before the sale and make up a want list of various item, I spend several days researching these first, seeing how much previous ones have sold for, etc. (one item I've been watching on ebay at $15.00 but haven't purchased for more than 3 months), I saw in Fred's sale went unsold in his last auction and was up again for bids, so I bid the minimum of $5.00 and won it. Others I based what I was willing to pay, cut out a few lots as better copies were coming up in other sales, then completed a DL'd bid sheet and faxed it in to Fred, you can also email or call him directly with your bids. THEN I Wait for the PRL to be announced and found out I had won 4 of 7 items, one I lost out bY $1.00 - dang it. He will invoice me later this week and then I pay, simple really. There is (on most all auctions) a buyers fee, Fred is 15%, K&F is 17.5%, then a per lot charge for packing FL - ¢.75 (max $3.00) and the shipping costs to be added in to your winning bids, which will be on the final invoice. Pay and you get the books.

My Fred Lake book auction wins came before I got an invoice (talk about trusting) but then again, I did provide good references, and coin book collectors are probably one of the most honest groups of people around. I emailed Fred about the invoice, since I had the books already, and had not paid him a dime yet. He sent me my total, and the S&H was much lower than other book auctions I've participated in previously. I still have not received my invoice from him, lost in the mail or mis-delivered possibly, I sent Fred payment via USPS MO the day after I was emailed my total at my request. Fred Lake =GOOD GUY book dealer, and highly recommended.

On to part 2 of the Margo Russell auction yesterday; I really had my heart set on 2 lots, I ended up with 4, while there were over 9 lots on my want list, I just couldn't afford them all this month. Prices were strong on the pieces I wanted, except the 2 I REALLY wanted (YAY!). So now I'm just waiting for the invoice, I have completed my set of Numismatic Scrapbook magazines. I bought complete sets of the first 3 years. The first issue was less than 200 printed and not many kept over the years. As you can imagine, for a first issue of a magazine, not really many subscribers yet, so they were most likely given out for free to dealers, and others that would not be keen on keeping much clutter around for long in a busy shop.

Q. David Bowers classifies the Numismatic Scrapbook, as one of his most important and often referenced, as well as read items, in his personal library. It contains a snapshot of the coin marketplace from the mid to late 1930's on through 1976 when the magazine ended. Bowers ran his very first advertisement in the year of 1955 in the publication.

Feel great to complete another set of a really hard to complete collection.

I received my copy of the Bugert's book on San Francisco minted halves and have been flipping through it.
