I'm afraid I'd have to . Looks like a punch slightly smaller than the cent was lined up, although not perfectly, and struck.

But this type of PMD, or possible error, isn't something I've seen before, so I'll tune in to see what others have to say.

It looks like it was once an Encased Cent now removed aka PSD.

The interesting shoulder around the circumference seems to vanish around 7k to 8k on the Obverse - and also on the Reverse in the same area. How would that be with an Encased Cent?

Interesting coin. I'm not sure I understand what's meant by "encased"? And how it would create the effect shown after the strike has already occurred?

They're saying it was enclosed in something, like for jewelry.

No it was encased like a "Gook Luck" Aluminum holder. Those are pressed into that holder. If it were encase as in jewelry, the rim would still be normal. They are fit into the bezel, not pressed into the holder. If you have a coin in the "Good Luck" aluminum holder, it is best to leave it there. When removed the coin is just a damaged coin.

Was just going to say that about the encasing... lol.

I've thought about taking out my VF 1927 cent that is in a good luck thing, but now knowing that it's 99% likely it'll look like so, I've rethought it.

The subject coin was definately removed from a "Lucky Penny" encasement that had design about the pressed in area that is often just flat as on your coin. Some are round and others horseshoe shaped. Probably other shapes too. The Indian head was removed as per above. The encased 1953-D is a typical example retained.

Those are very neat, Koinpro. Reminds me of Penny Loafers. I always put dimes in mine. Can't buy them anymore, not even regular loafers. My wife says that's a good thing.
