it is not dirty, I believe it was minted that way, it's a beautiful piece, a matte finish with smooth rim...but dark gray, I have never seen one like this...any ideas where to look this up? thank you

Is it a consistent gray or are there areas where it is darker if it is the latter it is probably PMD

To CCF , I have a few Mercury dimes that look like that. It's not unusual, probably just from being in dirty environments for decades and that dirt was worn into the coin, as you can tell your Merc is worn especially the reverse. not a mint error !
