Yes, in the real Coin World. Absolutely details. This isn't the real Coin World, at least in this sort of coin category. Adkins can put enough pressure on PCGS to have it graded any which way. PCGS (and the others) tend to be a bit less "by the book" on very rare key date coins, since they serve as "halo" coins in auctions and showcases. This is especially true when you have a Gary Adkins or David Lawrence pushing the coins through the grading room. You would expect that a coin of this caliber would be scrutinized down to the tiniest nick, but more often than not, that's not the case. What looks like a gouge or scrape to you and I becomes a "heavy bag mark" and the coin gets a pass. PCGS, the auction house, and the dealer all win. (Both fine dealers, by the way, and I have bought several higher end coins from both, but I am not going to say they don't use their prestige to influence TPG grading standards on their coins, because they do.)

PCGS, the graders and the seller should be ashamed of themselves for sliding this stuff through the grading process and giving it a legitimate grade just because it's a rare coin. They are almost stooping to the level of the basement slabbers! (And grading is completely anonymous? Yeah, right!) Whomever buys this coin should NEVER bust it out of the current slab. To do so will get the coin the details grade it should have had in the first place. This just confirms suspicions that when you are a big submitter, and significantly contribute to the TPG company bottom line, you can pull a few strings and get things done.

The ultra gray surfaces of this coin scream cleaned. Don't really agree with the VF grade either.
The whack on the date makes, even this key date, less value.

To me if I owned a like coin that looks substantially better, and graded the same, do I talk to my lawyer? Is my coin worth a lot more AND DESERVE SOME HIGHER GRADE?

This "confirms" nothing. No one has presented any actual "proof" of anything here...

I don't think there is PVC damage on this coin. but that gouge in date is really sad. deal killer for me. I agree with the grade as far as wear. Maybe should have gotten DETAILS . would also add; questionable color.

I believe this exact coin was either discussed here, or on a PCGS thread, many months ago. I know I've seen it somewhere else.

Like other "rarities" ('77 IHC for example), the 1916 SLQ always gets a break.
