I saw a similar topic and the picture attached to that post showed what was obviously a "D" mint mark, although it wasn't pristine. The responses did answer that poster's question
My quarter is similar, but slightly different. The mint mark isn't obviously anything.
It's off-set square-shaped, more recessed at the edges, and, honestly, my imagination could easily "decide" it's D or S or P... How does one tell?
Thank you in advance!

It's a D.

There was no P MM for that year. The S MM only appeared on proofs.

You can always check the US Coin Facts (gray column to the left) to see what MM were used.

And you can look at different MM's on Variety Vista to compare the pics to your coin.

So... It basically HAS to be a D by virtue of elimination. Thank you!

Well, it could be an S if it were a proof, but judging by the photo it is not a proof, so D it is.

Yes.

After 1977 they started making mint marks larger because there were so many blobs. In 1980 they added the Philly mint mark and it created a slightly different shaped blob.

It was 1984 before the problem was largely solved on quarters. Finding nice well made '77-D quarters isn't extremely hard but typically they aren't very nice and about a quarter (D's) have a filled mint mark.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.
