Not much to look at at first glance, but I think it's a plain cord small letters. I was looking at the spacing in STATES on the reverse. A couple of issues but will fill the hole nicely. Probably dark in hand, seller is using bright lights. G details?

Plain cords are tough, and this does appear to be one, although I didn't haul out Newcomb.

It's got a lot of issues, as I'm sure you are aware. But a coin that circulated enough to get down to this G/VG grade endured considerable travel.

Yes I realize the issues, but for $7.80 shipped, a plain cord small letter was an easy decision, especially with a blank hole to fill. You're right, tough variety.

It is a smaller letter (N-5, 9, 10, 11, and 12) Of those only N-5 has plain cords. I can't see the cords well enough to tel from that if it is plain cords or not BUT! It has a die crack from the rim past star 3 through Star 4 and it disappears heading for star 5. The portion of the crack that can be seen perfectly matches the die crack seen on N-5. So it is N-5 plain cords, small letters R-2.

Plain cords should be fairly common on the 1837's They are found of N-1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 17. N-1 through 7 are all R-1 or R-2 coins, N-13 through 17 are all R-4.

Nice one, ed.
I myself am looking for an 1830 N-6 (small letters) in nice but affordable condition. I guess many people are. A couple are available but are not what I am looking for.
