Hi guys, I'm new to this forum and just wanted to ask what this coin was. I tried researching it on my own but the closest result I found was the copper plate error, and that's definitely not it.. From what I can tell it isn't a plate simply because it's somehow been well circulated and there are no signs of a silver color in the scratches. I'll upload some pictures below :) Thanks!

it could have either been part of a science experiment that used chemicals to change the color, or plated recently. if it was plated recently, there would be evidence of wear from before, but the gold may have not worn yet. if you have a gram scale, try to weigh it. also, maybe scratch the edge a little on a jewelers stone or something very fine to see if the silver will then show underneath.

It's just plated. No more complicated than that.

Not sure if anyone is still active on here, but what are the chances I have a gold toned 1985P Jefferson nickel as well? Did the original poster decide to put it back into circulation and I just so happened to end up with it? Or was there someone out there plating only 1985P's? I could provide a pic but not exactly sure how to do that one this forum...

That's not gold-toned, it's plated. And as far as being inactive,

it never is. Many mornings there are over 100K users, on this sight.

Remember, this is worldwide.

To CCF Aaron Welch! Your Nickel must have been plated, as that cannot happen at the U.S. Mint. It would be considered Post Post Strike Damage.

When you try scratching it, do it on the edge of the coin, not on the faces.
