Hello All,

I was wondering if someone knows this varity of this As from janus.

I look at the reverse and above the Galley ship it looks like there is an sphinx/deer.
I can't find similair types of this coin. with something above the Galleyship.

This coin weights alround 24,66 grams.

I know of letter monograms being used to denote moneyers but I haven't seen images being used on Republican As.

Ive seen those also alround. Maybe I am wrong and it is not an deer figure. But it looks like the sphinx you see on castulo look a like coins.

I found one with deer, but it is an dog

I don't know. I only can find a few with an dog above. But this aint an dog for sure. Or an very strange one with wings...

There are alot of series known I found off this piece. There are bird series but I only find prows. There is an saturn on deer series. I found letters above the ship. But no sphinx/pegasus....

Ive got some help from an auction house. They told me it is an griffin above the galley. I have looked ad examples an indeed it looks the same

Griffin series Æ As. Rome, 169-158 BC. Laureate head of Janus, I above / Prow right, griffin above, I before, ROMA below. Crawford 182/2. 24.57g, 32mm, 3h. Very Fine. Very Rare

oh cool, who doesn't like a griffon?! nice coin man, I love these things...picked up one a couple months ago ...they feel great in hand.
