Hey guys, A few weeks ago I sent a coin to NGC for grading. It was graded and returned on the 22nd of July. By the 29th, it had been "released by customs" and been "processed" by Canada Post. For some reason been stuck in Vancouver (Richmond) since then! No updates, or nothing. Two weeks for a parcel to get to Calgary from Vancouver? It has already cleared customs! Has anybody else ever had this happen? Being quite a valuable coin it's starting to worry me... Edited by pattiewhack 08/08/2015 05:47 am

I always see a lot of problems with customs taking a lot of time for stuff to clear. Heck, I even heard of I think Australia where they confiscated the coins because it interfered with one of there rules about coins or something of that nature. Anyway, like I said I always see everyone complain about the post times and eventually they get there items. Just custom issues I am guessing.

Ask Canada Post to start a trace, you have a tracking #, this package has passed custom, still in CP system, good luck!

I agree. You've given it enough time. It's time to jump to the PO and file for tracking.

Didn't Canada stop delivering mail on Saturdays? You have a Sunday and a Civic Canadian Holiday (Aug. 2nd & 3rd) in there too so I think you're at about 6 business days which seems like a long time when waiting but from my experience in shipping to Canada 10 days to 2 weeks is about the norm. By all means start a trace if it's not delivered Monday but don't sweat it out this weekend.

It is nothing to worry about. The Richmond parcel plant does foreign registered as soon as customs releases them which can take a week to ten days. My last shipment took two days to get to Van from JFK and twelve days to clear customs and get to me fifty five miles away! Current one is still in customs arrived August 12th from JFK and will be here on the 21st. NGC gets held up all the time even though the NOEE exemption number is very clear and in large letters on the registered package. Customs in Vancouver is notorious for holding up NGC packages. For whatever reasons. Do not worry it will show.

Definitely something to worry about. The parcel turned up "Processed in Mississauga" on August 10, and now the tracking number no longer is no longer in the system. I started a service ticket with Canada Post almost 2 weeks ago but of course it went absolutely nowhere. I have not heard one word from them and despite calling many times they never have anything to tell me and no new information. Absolute frustration. How do I go about reporting this to NGC?

NGC won't be able to help much if Canadian Customs is the offending party. Just call them at their normal tollfree; maybe the package was returned undelivered, or maybe they can apply a little pressure on your behalf, but they've no legal responsibility here.

It isn't being held by Canadian customs, the parcel was released by customs THREE WEEKS ago! The parcel entered the Canada Post mailstream for delivery (after clearing customs) on July 29th and has been lost/misplaced by Canada Post after that time.
I was told by Canada Post to wait until one calendar month from the sending of the parcel (July 27) and then that the sender (NGC) would have to file the complaint under the Postal Act at that time...

"Lost in mail" is one of the reasons why it is a good idea to learn to accurately grade coins for yourself. If a professional grader, using only his eye and a 10X loupe, can accurately grade a few coins per minute, then surely after learning and experience, we should be able to take ten minutes per coin, and do nearly as well as the TPG'ers.

Very true SEL but the issue usually isn't the grading it is the resale value of the coin. The reality in the North American market is that TPG graded coins bring more money.

Oh, please, let's get off the I hate TPGs soapbox. Not the issue here. The issue is Canada Post's handling of a REGISTERED mail package. If it makes you happier, it was raw coins bought from a retired fireman who now lives in Sarasota FL.
I entered your tracking# into the USPS site - it ends with "Your item cleared customs in CANADA at 1:53pm on July 29, 2015.
Next step is to call NGC customer service. I'm not sure if 1-800#s work in CDN so here is both:
1-800-NGC-COIN toll free (+1) 941 360 3990
They are nice people on those lines, they should be able to start the trace and the insurance claim... (sorry)

At least in the US, if the package is lost the most you will get for it is $50 unless and only if you bought and paid for insurance for a higher amount. Even a registered package requires insurance above $50 value. Since NGC sent the package, they will be able to tell you the insured amount, if any, above $50. Trying to say that this is a reason to grade yourself and not ship through a TPG is just silly. A coin can go missing when sent from anyone to anyone. The coins exchanged via mail dwarf the number sold at attended auctions or shows. I'm still hoping this comes out okay for you. I'd love to read that you finally received your coin. Then we want a PICTURE of it!

So did I but apparently being international makes it a big problem as far as insurance. A month for a shipment from the USA to Canada is insane by any standard and now to hear I probably have no recourse for reimbursement is even worse... I don't understand how this can happen in this day and age. Absolutely beyond frustrating.

They do but since it is a Registered Mail package ad it left the country the MAXIMUM reimbursement amount the Post Office will pay out for the package is $50, no matter how much insurance was purchased.
NGC has proof they mailed it, the Post office shows it was delivered to Canadian customs, and customs shows it was handed off to the Canadian Post. All you ca hope now is that it eventually shows up. If it doesn't you might be able to get the $50 but probably that's it.
