Very interesting listing/coin: http://www.ebay.com/itm/13157004453...RK:MEBIDX:ITBased on the pictures, I would say Genuine. The diagnostics seem to say S-189. Coin looks to have been recolored and the surfaces seem too nice, so I'm thinking whizzed. Of course, without seeing in person, I couldn't be sure. Looks like PCGS doesn't like the coin. Any other opinions?

It appears on the surface to be S-189. Looking at the date, especially the last 9, I just don't know for absolutely sure. It's a 50/50 chance. I would not buy this coin personally.

If it stumped PCGS, I'm 10 foot poleing this one.

You don't see "Authenticity Unverifiable" from PCGS very often. Ouch.

No thanks...if PCGS says "Authenticity Unverifiable" then I'm gonna assume it's probably a fake.

Authenticity Unverifiable means it was a real puzzle... it means the coin has to have passed all of the basic tests (weight, diameter, even composition) or it would have been marked counterfeit... Quoting from http://www.pcgs.com/grades/Quote: Authenticity Unverifiable Fee not refunded. In the rare instances where the experts at PCGS are unable to determine conclusively that a coin is either genuine or counterfeit, that coin will be returned to the submitter ungraded.
PCGS spends a great deal of time examining coins that have been harshly cleaned, corroded and or tooled. PCGS must be able to positively determine that a coin is both genuine and has not been "holed and plugged". In some situations the surface of the coin is completely destroyed, and in these instances PCGS will not render an opinion on the coin. Many counterfeit coins are harshly altered or intentionally damaged in an attempt to fool the grading services. If a coin is worn or damaged to an extent that makes it impossible to identify the date, mint mark, or variety, an Authenticity Unverifiable will be issued.

Quote: If a coin is worn or damaged to an extent that makes it impossible to identify the date, mint mark, or variety, an Authenticity Unverifiable will be issued. That is interesting, because it doesn't look too worn or damaged Maybe they couldn't identify the variety

Variety is a tool to verify authenticity. They literally spend seconds grading coins. I imagine they spent a little more time on this one..but not much.
In a nutshell, they weren't sure of authenticity.

I think the date may have been retooled.
If it were resubmitted, I'd bet the same thing would happen. Be interesting to buy it and see what NGC says.

$961 for that coin is pretty insane. I think it's real, but heavily worked.
It's an exceedingly scarce date, and it's far and away the cheapest 1799 you're going to find if it's real. the Bay currently has a "PCGS Genuine" example for $1.9k, a mutilated AG for $2.4k, a full grade PO-01 lowball for $3k, and a super-porous G details in a SEGS holder for "only" $766.50 (with 5 days left and 32 bids already.)
Some dreamer wants $29.4k for a Genuine PCGS (claimed XF details, but not) example...
