I received this cent in change sometime today.

It looks like it was released from its Mint Set recently:

Either that, or WAY at the bottom of someone's change jar.
Rest in Peace

Nice find but it wouldn't have needed to come out of a mint set - there's lots of uncirculated or near uncirculated 50's wheaties that have been saved from business strikes over the years.

It is hammered.

It seems a disproportionate number of lightly worn coins showing up in circulation recently are very well made coins suggesting they've been cherry picked and the specimen didn't make the cut. Maybe the owner didn't like the spotting on the reverse.

It may well have originated in a mint set.

I have bags of 1950's reds that I swear I will 'some day' look through. More than likely, my kids will take them to the bank, hopefully none to soon. A lot of 50's reds make it into circulation that way as so few bank tellers even glance at what come in.

Agree with mox. I don't have bags of 50s reds, but I do have at least a half dozen rolls of 1957-1958 each mint, and I'll bet 75% of them are red or part red.
