Yesterday I picked a coin from my 'uncleaned' pile to work on and when I had cleaned it enough to read what I had, I found it to be a 'well-worn':-

CRISPUS, 318-319 AD. AE3.
AE19 mm., 3.0 gm.,
Obv: CRISPVS NOBILISS CAES, laureate cuirassed bust R.
Rev: VOT.V./MVLT.X./CAESS/TS.E. Four lines within laurel wreath.
Thessalonica mint.
RIC.VII.38
Rare. R3.

It's always nice to find a rare rated coin. Unfortunately the rarity rating doesn't really mean a whole lot when it comes to value. I have a number of coins rated at R5 in my collection that are only worth a few dollars. Though the discovery of a rare example is exciting all the same. You might be able to bring out more detail on this coin if you left it soak for a while longer.

@Ron - Of course you are right, Ron, but the 'dollars' are not the motivation, and to hold something that (at some time) was reasonably rare, is pretty 'special', don't you think? My love of coins is all about the 'feeling' that I get when I hold them, and the history is the major part of that.
I have taken your advice and it is in the DW as we speak.

Thanks, Athalbert. There is a whole undiscovered world out there.
