Folks, hear me out before you judge me

I bought a coin just today from Centsles. Not cheap coin, several hundred dollars, infact.

I have stayed far, far away from that guy since I first started collecting, I knew to keep my distance even before I heard the horror stories from those who've bought from him before.

Obviously the bad pictures, tampered surfaces, basement slabbing and grade inflation don't help, but I've got a good feeling about this purchase.

The coin is NGC graded, he occasionally sells PCGS/NGC graded coins, and I managed to snag the coin in Auction for about a third of FMV. Too good to be true? I guess we'll have to see when I have it in hand.

The pictures in the listing were horrible, unclear scans, but after a quick Cert Lookup, I found that the NGC website had clear, crisp pictures. With buyer protection I am protected (Paypal seems to have increased their buyer protection to 180 days now, that's ridiculous).

The coin isn't rare as such, but certainly not common either, especially in higher grades.

I will keep you CCF'ers updated!

Was it the 1920 25cent that ended today?

I've bought a couple fairly scarce varieties from centles in the past, because he never knows (or knew) what they were and, coupled with the crappy photos, most people didn't bite either. However, you really really have to be careful when buying from him and examine things carefully.

I also am very leery when viewing his pricy cents.. and I haven't heard the horror stories,.

...but my feeling is that you have to 'know your stuff' before treading into his lair....

I once purchased a cent for a couple of hundred dollars in one of his holders with a high MS grade. When I received the coin in hand I was of the opinion that it had been very competently whizzed. I returned the coin and received a problem free refund. Curiously a very similar looking coin later appeared for sale at a slightly reduced grade. I suspect it now resides in someone's collection.
Rest in Peace

You stand a pretty good chance of being ok buying an NGC graded coin from this guy. I bought some old ANACS graded coins from him years ago and they were fine. The stuff to stay away from is his own clown suit slabs - NNC. Look forward to your images.

Agreed. We've bought a couple of PCGS coins from him over the years and they've been fine.

I've seen some nice coins that I'd like to own in his store before, but I refuse to give him any business on principle because of his selling practices (which to most here are known well enough)
