Hi all. I have this very odd looking 1942I Aussie half D. Has a die crack running down from the kings ear and a planchet crack under the kings bust. I am a little confused as to how the odd looking marks on the kings neck originated though. How would these marks possibly be caused during minting, or is it post strike damage. They are smooth in texture with no visible signs of scratching/ damage. Any thoughts from error collectors.

My guess would be a lamination flaw, with the whole section from the king's ear down getting ready to detach.

as far as the neck....I'd say it's a lamination that has not yet surfaced. Seems to be just raised slightly. I'm sure there is some air in there if you were to scratch it with a knife but please please don't do that leave it just as it is

Thanks guys, very much appreciate your help. Would such a lamination error be sought after by collectors( a keeper) or pretty run of the mill in your opinion? I like to collect errors and varieties, but have not had much to do with lamination errors so far.

There are Pre Decimal error collectors who might be interested in this coin. I have about 30 - 40 lamination type errors, but I don't buy them, I just find 'em & keep 'em.
I concentrate on Decimals errors, although I do have some Pre Dec errors that I collected prior to 1966.
If you decided to sell it, you might get up to $10, but it all depends on who's looking at the time. The rest of the coin appears to be in pretty good condition.

Thanks nancyc, I think it's about VF otherwise, found it in a bulk lot and thought it looked odd, so put it aside. Not looking to sell it, but rather, want to find out more about these lamination flaws now. Seeing I have one now, it's sparked a little interest for me, so would like to find out if they are popular, or not so popular with collectors, what years, if any are they common, or not so common, and what types to look out for, position, type etc. I also like the decimal errors/variety, but not finding too much of interest, outside of blobs, die cracks, and far too many off sets at the moment in Brisbane. An incursed Millenium 50 cent would be nice, but haven't found one to date. Anyway I live in hope, Mark

I don't think that lamination flaws are more common in any specific year/s, it's just pot luck as to when they show up. I'm trying to get my error coins organised, working on $2 Rim Cuds at present & planned to do the Lam Flaws next, so will post a list in the Forum when I've got something that makes sense.
