Hi all. I am new to this forum but not new to collecting coins and currency. I am thinking about buying a $500 bill. As of right now I would like to get one from the 1928 series because it seems there are about 10 times rarer than the 1934 series. And I would like to buy a graded note by PMG or PCGS, that is problem free and with no tears or writing on it. Other than that I can't say. I have close to $2000 that I would be willing to invest. Thought and comments would be greatly appreciated.

1928's are better as long as they have condition in line with the money you are paying. 1934's are naturally more plentiful so you'd have more to select from. I'd watch the online auctions on ebay and the Tuesday Heritage currency auctions and go from there. If you have coin shows close, it never hurts to see what is available there. At a show you can at least see what you are buying before you fork over the money. Buying certified is the only way to go unless you are getting an exceptional deal on a raw note that meets YOUR grading standards. Good luck and enjoy the search because the search is half the fun!

Something else to consider - with a bit of searching, you should be able to find a '34 series in a 64 holder for your budget - not so for a '28 issue. Personally, I went for the '34 just because I wanted to own a nice-looking example for the price!

I'll try to find a pic of mine and the price.

Here it is - I think this was around $1,900 last fall. It's not PPQ, but it's nice and fresh-looking, and I don't realy care since I don't intend to start collecting them!

Large denomination notes are always popular, and I strongly suspect that once the economy improves their prices will rise as more people will be able to afford them.

Nice note coinfrog. Does it pay to look at $1000 bills? I didn't really think about it before but I wonder what kind I could get for the money I have

In the '34 series. you should be able to get a TPG XF for that money, maybe even AU if you're lucky. When you're talking in the 64 range, it's closer to $3,500 - $4K. This one was around $3,700 last fall.
