I have previously posted some of my collection of Canadian local dollar tokens - more than 1,000 different types were issued, of which I have about 300. Last week, my interest was piqued when I found this interesting volume at a flea market... As it happens, I have about four items listed in this catalog in my collection... Fairbanks, Alaska - Birthday Year Souvenir Money, 1959 Sioux Falls, South Dakota - South Dakota Souvenir Coin, 1961 Washington State - Century 21 Exposition Dollar, 1962 Honolulu, Hawaii - Hawaii Dollar, ND (presumably 1976) Numista calls these "Centennial Dollars", but only lists 12 in its database: http://www.en.numista.com/catalogue...nial+dollarsI have to know more! Were a lot of these American local dollars issued, just like Canadian local dollars were? Does anyone here have any in their collection? Was one private mint responsible for most of them? Were they just a 1960s and 1970s thing, or did the trend last longer? Do they have any relation to "so-called dollars"? Does anyone in the United States actively collect these? The catalog I posted was actually published in Ontario, and the majority of its listing of stores that deal in tokens are actually located in Canada, so I am wondering what the connection between Canadian and American local dollars could be. I believe Americans often refer to these as "so called dollars." I have that same catalogue, but never pursued it much, although I have a few around.

Here is a book on them This is the web site that goes with the book http://www.so-calleddollars.com/index.htmlYes I have a growing number of them and have posted them over the last year as I have come across them. They were more common in years past at least around here. Here is one that is produced every year. As a souvenir, you can use it at Buds. I do have a number of the so-called dollars that were produced by the towns with in the area of were I live. But none to recent. I think they moved on to more cheaper souvenir items and now are into digital app type things for discounts and such during the founder and other celebrations. The local two local events one went from a two week full blown big deal to a sorry half a**ed week end. And the other was moved to a more centralized location with closer parking and less complaints from residents and store owners about the drop in business.

For Hawaii issues, this is the primary guide (and its free). Mr. Simon Cordova authored this information. http://sicordova.com/HMSCD20thCentury.htmlThe bottom of the webpage lists the reference (has the book listed from the original posting of this topic).

Not sure if this one would count: Information is scant, but appears to have been used during the rededication of the St. George Utah LDS temple around November 12, 1975. Nice, thick hunk of brass.
