Hi
I am very new to coin collecting and I have decided to collect british crowns as my Grandad had a few in his collection which I have now taken on.
I know very little about them and was wondering if anyone knew where I can get a checklist of all british crowns so at least I know what I need to collect and tick them off when I get them.
Thank you for any help!

Emily, you have a formidable task ahead of you! This informative website by your fellow countryman - Tony Clayton - will provide you with valuable information not only on the British Crown but on all the coins of the UK. Good luck! http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/

Coin community is a great forum but the UK experts are at Predecimal.com I only found out today there are 9 die varieties of the 1951 crown. Tony Clayton site is good for newbies but I never use it.

Welcome Emily to the forum.
First you might want to think about whether you want a type set or a date set. A type set is one of each kind, a date set is one of every date. If you want this latter be prepared to spend a great deal of cash. With the type set, you might not want to get the minor varieties. To start off, it might be easier to get one of each major type.
For the 20th century, you will need one of each of these for a type set:
Edward VII 1902 crown
George V 1927 to 1936 wreath crown all fairly expensive as issued only in limited numbers, some years worse than others 1935 jubilee "rocking horse" crown
George VI 1937 coronation crown 1951 festival of Britain crown
Elizabeth II pre-decimal 1953 coronation 1960 1965 Churchill
Elizabeth II decimal 1st series - 25p coins 1972 Elizabeth and Philip 1977 jubilee 1980 Queen Mother's 80th birthday 1981 wedding of Charles and Diana 2nd series - £5 coins 1990 Queen mother 1993 40th anniversary of coronation 1996 Queens 70th birthday 1997 Royal Wedding 1998 Princes trust 1999 in memory of Diana 2000 millenium
total 19 coins
Cant help you with others as I am at work and this is the only book I brought. The Clayton site is a superb start, but will not list some minor varieties.
regards

With the GV crowns you will need deep pockets..1934 in UNC are £5k. I only have the Rocking horse crown in reams. I sold my 1902 because I wanted better. There are are some rare variations of others. Buy the book.

Just a thought - the £5 coins from 1990 are not strictly crowns, but crown-sized coins. Crowns were originally 5 shilling coins, which became the 25p coins in the early part of Elizabeth II's reign. It was then thought such a big coin ought to be worth more than 25p, so they made it £5. I think most people ignore this fine distinction and just call them crowns.

I'm trying to find a few crowns myself - currently I have the 1977 Jubilee and several of the themed 5 and 20 pound coins.
And they're right, they can be pricy, which is why I stick to reputable dealers.
HM ought to be issuing a 2017 Diamond Jubilee, shouldn't she?

I would imagine there will be one earlier than that. Currently Queen Victoria is the longest reigning monarch England has ever had. HRH beats that some time this September. I cannot see The Royal Mint missing an opportunity there.

Hmmm, a Longest Reigning Monarch crown - you don't see those every day. Or even every century.
In Sterling, of course.

Anaximander: you wouldn't include the Victoria 1900 crown?

Get a copy of Richard Trowbridge's 'Crowns of the British Empire', 2nd Edition. It includes crowns of Britain for each Monarch, and the Empire when they came into being. Well worth the money. It's a little hardcover book, available on ebay or Abebooks. You won't need any other reference if you have this, unless you specialize in varieties or something.

MoeTate - I would include that crown, but this raises a question re numbering years. Is 1900 part of the 19th century, or part of the 20th? Most people seem to think that it is the 20th, but then my mathematical mind tells me that the first century has been short-changed, being only years 1 to 99.
