Hello all. My Father in Law recently took a trip back home to TX and while there, his mother mentioned a collection of gold dollar coins that his father had purchased a few years back off of TV, infomercials, online, etc. Given that my Father in Law knew that I was into coins and errors and had made some $ off of them, he brought them back for me to look through. I know and have seen the cheesy infomercials in attempt to sell " Mint Collectable Coins" but didn't think and am not sure that they check these for errors. Is it worth my time to go through them or should I expect that they are smarter than that.? Thanks!

Do you have any pictures of them? Are they US mint issued dollars?

If the coins are uncirculated Presidential dollars, it's hardly worth checking them out. If they're actual gold dollars (the little three-cent-sized fishscale-thin pieces that are such a treat to look at), you might be lucky.

I need to redo this post...Seems that my Mother in Law got a little confused when she told me that they were gold dollars. Saw the coins today for the first time and they are actually all State Quarters...

Anything bought on TV has helped pay the cost of putting that thing on TV, which is enormous. Even aside the moral greasiness we all paint those television hucksters with, simple math says they have to overcharge for the coins to cover the cost of presenting them.

Not with stolen money, would I.

You can search through them for errors, but the sold on TV coins are, for the most part, a gimmick.
I have a brother-in-law who was taken in by this same sort of thing. They will usually put common coins in a fancy limited edition holder to try to convince the buyer that they are getting a special deal or a chance at a rare investment. The money spent on them can not be recovered in the same lifetime.
