I was looking at ebay last night for a group of clad 1999-2008 full proof sets and they are in the range of $120-150. Do you think that the clad proof sets from 2010-2021 ( ATB full sets) will drop like this once the series is over? Edited by djx 08/18/2015 2:44 pm

2012 was bit of a key series year in proof sets and silver proof sets so I wouldn't expect them to go that low. And it's too early to tell if we might have a repeat of 2012 before the series is over?

Wasn't 2008 also a keydate at one time?

Most all Proof and mint sets drop in value.
Even the 2012 sets are starting to come down from their high's.
The 1999 Silver proof set was very high, I think around $300 .. now can be bought between $75 and $100.
Sets are not good for investment, they are good for filling albums.

Yes they will probably come down. Quote: Wasn't 2008 also a keydate at one time? Yes, so were the 1999 and 2001 sets. Back in 1999 I was able to get $50 for the clad set for that year. The 2001 clad was the super high value of the 2001 silver set, but for awhile it also brought a seriously high value.

I have no research here at all other than experience, but most US mint products seem to lose value over time in the secondary market.
Once the hype wears off or most collectors fill that hole, dealers need to turn their inventory and they do that on price.

The reason I asked this question is because I'm debating if I want to buy them now or just wait until this series is over. I kind of wish I would've waited to buy the 99-08 sets now.

I have proof sets from the 70's and early 80's that were bought for me that I are worth peanuts.
I would say, go with what history tells you on this. Which is that proof sets generally do not really go up in value over time.

However, for me coin collecting is much less about investing and much more about having the coins to enjoy. I buy proof sets every year, but I do understand that my children probably won't get as much as I paid for them when I'm gone.

The 2012 silver proof sets have definitely come down, but I attribute some of that, and the value of the other years to the drop in silver.

I look forward to 2017 when the sets will return to two lenses and a lower price. However, I've heard that they are considering issuing both regular and RP sets, so I'll have to buy both.

I started buying the proof sets to make sure I had all of the 50 State Quarters. Then I continued when ATB was being issued (somehow I got lucky to get a 2012 straight from the mint it seems looking back at my order history and reading these comments). That said, I will probably stop buying the proof sets once ATB stops unless they come out with another quarter set.

Then what's after round 2? Famous people from each of the 50 states? :P
