I need to mail a roll of 50 Lincoln Cents, but my scale doesn't go that high.

Can someone tell me what a roll weighs so I can figure out the proper postage?

Thanks.

Paul, assuming they're all the heavier copper cents, those are 3.11g each. So 155.5g total. Using google to convert that I get 5.4851oz.

Lets also assume your envelope weighs .5-1.0 ounce. That puts us roughly at 6.5 ounces. That's the most conservative estimate. Your envelope might weigh less or you may be using the 2.5g lincoln cents. Many variables here.

Personally, I would just take your padded envelope into the post office and have them weigh it/calculate postage right there. Much easier than trying to guess the weight of the coins & envelope.

Hope this helps.

Thanks! My padded mailer only weighs .4 ounce, so I'll go with seven ounces just to be safe.

The coins are Wheat Cents.

Perfect. You should be good with 6, but 7 I think would be safer.

What does the scale go up to? In the future you can round. Say your scale goes up to 10 pennies (I would hope it does since a Morgan weighs 9 pennies), then just multiply by 5. That will give you an idea, but it is best to go to the post office, or get a postal scale if you are printing postage at home.

Why is a scale necessary? All you need is a calculator.

When mailing something you aren't only charged for the contents but the packaging as well. So if you don't know that the envelope weights half an ounce, you will be missing information from your calculations. envelopes, cardboard, bubble wrap, etc all add to the weight and you are charged for shipping them as well.

If your rates are similar to US rates, unless you go over a threshold, a one ounce difference is maybe 15 cents.

European of course, now find me a shrubbery. I want to see if there are any coins to dig out from under it.

Seven ounces only cost $2.54 with ebay shipping.

I haven't sold any rolls before because I thought the cost would be too high, but this was fairly reasonable for the $2.50 I charge for shipping.

With ebay I would just go straight for Priority mail with signature confirmation, and insurance at buyers request. the whole "If it fits it ships." price. Also it is quicker than 3rd class mail that packages like coins take normally, and the sig con gives automatic tracking to see where it is like UPS tracking.

I'm lost. Why all the questions? Why not just take the thing to the post office and let them tell you. And they may want you to insure it for it's value so that too may up the cost. And is the tube a plastic one or just paper? Did you make the roll yourself and if so, how many times did you wrap the paper around the coins? All just kidding. Let the Post Office earn their money.
