Does anyone have a clue what this strange item could be?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

It could be early Cyrillic alphabet, so either Russian or Bulgarian.

I did some searching, and it wasn't so easy. There is not much information on this even on the Russian internet. This is a 25 kopeck(polupoltina) coin of tsar Aleksei Mikhailovich(1645-1675). On second picture you can see titles of the tsar. In 1654 there was a monetary reform, these were produced in silver, it was a thaler-heavy piece of silver cut in four pieces and stamped. Later there were produced also in copper, obviously this was asking for trouble(circulating 25 kopecks in silver and in copper) and it led to copper riot of 1662 after which copper coinage was abolished. I found a picture of a copy for you to see - http://coinsmoscow.ru/product__polu...m-1654-copy/

Also it seems to be pretty rare, and this looks very good so I think it's a copy too. Russians call it 'novodel' which means newly minted.

I don't see a picture of it but judging from inconsistentblend's post, I am more than certain that it is a copy, not a novodel.

Sellers have been misusing the word novodel which is not the same as copy. A novodel is best described as a restrike by the official mint which is not the same as copy. Every time when I see sellers using the word novodel to describe copy, you can be certain that they do not have good business ethics.

Depends on how, what, where, etc but some of the obvious ones are tarnish, corrosion, oxdized, verdigris, etc which are all negative.
