So how did this occur exactly and is its current condition mostly a result of factors occurring at the mint?

Not from the mint that's for sure. This is what
will eventually happen to all Zincolns after a few years
out in the wild, weather, ground etc. Might have started out at the mint
with some plating issues. Time and enviro factors finished it off.
Still costs more to mint these zincs than what they are worth. The end
may be near.

When the plating splits, it allows air to the zinc underneath. This reacts with Oxygen and then the zinc rots begins. First raising. (note the holes on the head. you can see they raised in those areas) Then if the coin continues to be circulated, then these will fall inward. (from contact with circulation) Then the zinc rot gets deeper) Sometimes coins are thrown in a parking lot and get ran over with cars leaving indents on the coin from very small stones and they start to show zinc rot as well. With enough time, they will just be a piece of copper plating.

Measles indeed, pretty severe case. It's a Wide AM, but even as I was flipping it I realized it made no difference on this one. I don't even want to touch it. Could you see it on ebay? I'll check out the ugly contest, but I'm sending this one back to the mint. It is a prime example, it kind of grows on you. lol

I am glad you did. A reminder to all what lurks beneath the surface of our unnecessary circulating cent.
