What a beautiful example! I've never graded one of these before, but I'll give it a shot - AU-55?

Holy cow, this is not what I expected to see. What a pleasant surprise. Fewer of these are in slabs than any other issue in the series. Fewer have appeared at auction. Maybe 10 sales of Mint State examples are on record. Sleeper, indeed, and this is a sleeper among them. I cannot decide if it has circulated or not. Either way, the surfaces are superb and eye appeal is ridiculous. What a terrific coin, a major highlight in any collection. I'm calling it AU58 for eye appeal. Street value well north of $5000. For those who may question, the date (only one die pair for these) is as expected, somewhat blundered.

AU-58 however a low MS grade wouldn't surprise me Quote: Obverse 14. The 8 and 9 in the date show evidence of repunching, leading some to call this an 1839/8 overdate, although it is actually an 1839/9. The 9 is very close to the hair curl, and distant from the border. Star 6 points to the bottom half of the headband, and stars 6 through 9 each show minor recutting.
Reverse F. Three Pale Gules. All letters in the legend are separated. The D in UNITED is slightly low. The lowest arrow point is below the inside right base of the final A and is separated from that letter. The stem tip is over the center of the D, and the lowest feather end is entirely right of the primary 2. The above variety diagnostics courtesy of Heritage Auction pdf I stumbled across a long time ago http://coins.ha.com/s/d/cqedvg.pdf
