He got this several days ago for, well, $30 and free shipping. I have it @ a XF-40, even though the lighting is weird in the first pic. I don't think it'd pull off details, a lot of Shield nickels get problem free grades with that color.

I don't hate the colour, but it looks like scratches around the date area.

Really, cleaned? My first thought was I questioned the scratches or marks by the date area. Is it still a $100+ coin in details?

Yeah, unfortunately, it's noticeable on the obverse, but if you look at the reverse, it appears someone scratched, or tried to rub off the corrosion from almost every nook and cranny. A problem free XF40 in a PCGS slab recently sold for $90 on ebay. So, yes it's a nice coin and could probably be flipped for a small profit.

Lower center leaves have lost all division between the halves, indicating this could not be higher than a VF 35, at the very best. The six point reverse star divisions looks slightly better than 35, but that doesn't bring the grade up to 40.

Couple this with the very obvious harsh tooling that has occurred and this really falls out of collectible grade for an awful lot of people. $30 is a perfectly acceptable price if you are only trying to fill a hole in a type set, but this coin would not be eligible for most date sets that I've ever seen.

It "only" sold on ebay for $30 because no one else believed it was worth more.

I whole heartedly believe in congratulating good finds, but I also believe it's unfair to someone that takes the time to ask not to tell the truth as I see it. I apologize if that seems harsh, as it isn't meant to be.

It looks at least VF-30, possibly VF-35.
