I guess it depends on the coin? What can happen to coins?

Speaking environmentally and within reason: Gold and silver coins are highly resistant to damage with copper/bronze/brass coins being much more reactive. There are numerous sources of information on the preservation of coins so I'll let it go at that. Enjoy and protect your coins realizing they are made of durable metals designed to last. Some ancients are testimony of that and incredible to behold.

Side effects are strictly dependent on how the coins are stored, the amount of humidity in the air, and any contact the coins may have with corrosive agents such as the platicizer in old cheap flips or sulfur content in paper or cardboard.

If you ask a more specific question I'm sure we can give more precise answers.

Otherwise, you could literally write a book on the "side effects".

Here is a link to the American Institute for Conservation in Washington, DC. It covers the problems that all metal artifacts face, many of which are applicable to coins.

All depends on the metal...

Certain metals, such as zinc and iron are especially susceptible...

As I began obtaining more of the German Notgeld pieces, which are primarily zinc and iron, I have begun storing the pieces with silica gel packs in the 2x2 boxes in the safe...
