hey all,

Found this tiny gold coin searching through a relative's collection.. Not totally sure if this is the correct forum but any comments would be appreciated! From what I've been reading online, its from California during the second "phase" of these. Also I'm not sure anyone knows if these were circulated currency or used for other purposes ie. jewelery. Pictures aren't great but hope it gives you something to look at. Are these sort of coins worth sending in to get graded? Thanks for any input and/or comments.

Nice coin!
I does fit all the marks for a BG-1011

If you want to sell it, you HAVE to have it graded.
If real and not cleaned, I think this would make ut up in the MS65 range. A 66 wouldn't surprise me.

A tourist replica? It's possible, however with the other gold coins found in the same wood box I would argue it's real. No idea if it's been cleaned but it was in a tiny wrap of scotch tape when found. The family member did not clean the coin but it could've been cleaned before. Thanks for the link epik
Rest in Peace

I'd send it to NGC myself. Especially since it should grade quite high if it is a second round contemporary piece.

Mine is a NGC MS-62 BG-1011 $240 for you to compare:

The fakes almost always have no denomination.

That one looks real. Agree with BG-1011, 1/2 Dollar Round California Gold, R2. AU details.

A similar example in UNC Details (Scratched) brought $160 in a HA sale 6 months ago.

They WERE circulated, but scarcely. Too difficult to keep track of and very easy to lose.
