Good luck. The key dates are very hard to come by in rolls or pocket change.
Keep your eyes out for really high quality examples and keep those. Nickels seem to really get banged up a lot. Keep all the super nice ones from the 60's and 70's and 80's. They are indeed few and far in between.

Just this week I've been sorting through 5 years worth of pocket change accumulation (we spend a lot of pocket change too, but still managed to save up a bunch). I had more than 35 rolls worth of nickels and I sorted them all out by year (I don't have a nickel book yet, so I was picking the best examples of each year for a book before cashing out the rest of them). Out of the 1400+ nickels I sorted through there were NO silver ones and none older than 1955. Very discouraging to say the least! LOL

Nickels (and pennies) are a popular denomination for young collectors because you can usually get pre-1965 coins from circulation or rolls.
I regularly search nickel rolls and I have to agree that older nickels are rare - although I did find a 1943 silver nickel once.
But I must admit that now, I roll search to update what I already have in my albums.
c_ball - There are also the "Full Steps" to consider. As you go through the rolls, check the steps on the reverse. If you can clearly see all of them, you have something that should be taken out of the pile and put in a 2x2.

I been pretty lucky going through rolls.I deal at a small bank plus I don't think theres very many collectors in our area.On the pennies I keep all from 82 back in decent shape. On my newer 62-95 nickel book I only need the 69S to finish it up.

I agree with the, "good luck" comment. I believe, if you're like me, you'll burn out searching nickels, too. Searching coins is fun, yes...it can be frustrating if the only expectation is to find key dates...I love looking for and finding errors and varieties, too, although, I've had to set a benchmark for "errors" since coin production is not and cannot be perfect. I use three or four different sources/lists of errors and varieties while I search through coins. It gets a little cumbersome now and then; however, it's more rewarding than disqualifying every coin that's not a key or semi-key date. I use (and print out some of) these websites while I search coins...after awhile I begin to memorize more varieties. If you use even two of them on a regular basis, I believe it will usefully expand your search base and usefully reduce wasting time and energy. http://conecaonline.org/content/Top1001cRPMs.htmhttp://hermes.csd.net/~coneca/varie...istings.htmlhttp://koinpro.tripod.com/ErrorVarietyList.htmhttp://www.diskworks.com/pocket.html#Pennies (has panes for other coins. http://wcsdeals.com/coins_us_error/index.htmhttp://www.brookfield-il.org/Collec...Errors.shtmlI have more than a dozen each of the nickels you listed...look no further if you are interested in acquiring one of each rather than searching for them. OP, if it makes you feel better, I've found the 47S 48S 49S in only this past year. I'm still hopeful that I'll pull a 50D out of circulation in my lifetime.

Here is a suggestion. Go to several banks and ask for a bag of Nickels. A few hundred dollars if they have them available. Same with the $50 bags of cents. The reason is some banks keep a bag in the vault due to having to many rolls of them. These bags sometimes sit for many years. Sometimes if the bank is a rather old one, the bags may have sat for a long, long time. At one really old bank I got one bag of Nickels and filled two Whitman Albums completely from 38 to the late 70's. Try it. If they have them they may have sat for a long, long time and be full of some really old coins.

I was just thinking that if I were to ask a teller: "Do you have any bags of coins in the vault?" she may think it's a stick-up/robbery attempt.

I go through nickels every week, have found several silver ones but never a buffalo. I just keep everything before 1955.
