I got a box of 5,000 pennies in the mail today and a bunch of them are labeled as errors/varieties. I'm still new at this, so I might be missing something, but most of them don't look like errors or die varieties to me. Can you please help me out? And if any of them ARE an error or variety, can you give me a ball park figure of what it's worth?

(1) I'm putting this one first because it's the only one I'm almost certain is for real...1955 Poor Man's Double

(2/3) Two 1955s both labeled as " DDO #2" I see nothing on either of them

(4) This one is labeled as "1957-d 5 Dbl" I see nothing.

(5) This one is labeled as "1964-D DDR" I see nothing except possibly a faint shadow on UNITED.

(6) This one is labeled as "1982 DDO-001" I see nothing.

(7) This one is labeled as "1986 DDO Strong US" Something's obviously going on with the rim, but beyond that I don't see doubling.

(8/9) Two labeled "1985-D RPM-001" I see nothing on the first one. The second one looks like maybe RPM and Machine Doubling on the date?

(10) Not labeled. Looks like probably post-mint mutilation, but could it be a wrong planchet? I don't have a weight...My scale only measures to the nearest gram...not tenths.

I think there are a few more error cards, but this is plenty for now!

The last one is post mint damage. On the others, it is impossible to tell from the pictures. The descriptions do describe die varieties that do exist but again, these pictures arent going to help much.

Thanks,
Bill

I think your second 1985-D is a double die and could be rare..there are two 1985 D/Ds (RPMs) on my list listed as rare (in any grade) with an UNC value around $45...I cant imagine what a 1985-D Double Die is worth if it's a true double die...it's a very nice coin...gimme !!

Poor Man's 1955's are very common.

Thanks Jim. I posted new photos of both 1985-D pennies (in separate threads). They both look almost identical to me, but I'm very inexperienced at this.

Your "poor man's" is such, but that only describes die wear on the outer 5 of the date. No premium value, they are very common.

Your other 1955 cents are normal. They are not 1955P-1DO-002 (DDO#2). The doubling on those coins would be obvious in the motto. Yours show none.

Your 1964D cent could possibly be a minor doubled die reverse, there are many of them known...thing is, your images would have to be a lot clearer and a lot closer to tell anything.

Your 1982 cent could possibly be the doubled die described as it used to be listed, but again, the images along with it's condition make online attribution rather impossible.

Your 1986 is die wear - that's how the zinc striking dies wore. Odd but true.

Your 1985 cents are unidentifiable by the images in this thread, but if they are the same coins as posted in other threads as you indicate, they are normal.

Your mutilated 195?-D cent is just that...mutilated with a wheel grinder.

If this is any measure of the other coins you picked up, they are very likely all going to turn out to be the same thing...collected by someone who had passion but no education. I have purchased dozens of such collections for a couple of cents a coin just to pull out any real stuff that might happen to be in them. I generally find a dozen out of a thousand that are actually labeled properly.

I think you're very right about that. I am about as much of a beginner as it gets, but I've been trying to learn and I think I already know a lot more than this guy did. I received a collection of about 5,200 coins. Most of the very early dates were severely cleaned...so much so that my newbie eyes hurt just looking at them! Most of his error cards (there were about 25) were either worthless or incorrect. I did manage to find a bunch of upgrades to my wheat book though, plus fill in one hole. He also had some very nice IHPs and a couple of them were upgrades for my book. I was hoping for better, but I'm not too upset because I can still resell the bulk of the collection for more than I paid for the whole thing.
