So earlier this year I went to the bank and got a whole pile of pennies. Slowly I've been making my way through them but I've been really busy and haven't had much time. I just started working on the '48 that were in the rolls. I think that two of these pennies are legitimately MS coins the rest are still in pretty nice grade with lots of luster. My issue and concern is that I have absolutely no way of differentiating between large denticles and small denticles. I looked at the catalog and my eyes just go blurry when trying to tell the difference. I tried counting the number of denticles and just went numb. So I was hoping someone could have a look at the photos.. I focused on the word GRATIA only in hopes that someone could provide some input. Sorry if the pictures are numerous or of poor quality. #1  #2  #3  #4  #5  #6  #7  #8  #9  #10  #11  #13  #14  #15  #16  #17  #18  #19  #20  #21  #23  Sorry but #12 and #22 I didn't optimize into smaller files and at this point I hope there is enough pics for one to point out the differences if there are any at all... If I am not mistaken there are a different number of denticals on the large and small versions. All of these coins have 14 from the peak of one A to the peak of the other A. To me they all appear to be the same if that helps.

I didn't do them all but a sample is: Points between denticle- #1,3,4 Points to denticle- #2,5,6,7,8,9,10

I went through all of my Canadianew coins recently. And had a stack of 65 nickels trying to find the large bead detatched. Which also has a different number of denticals. Found myself counting the whole coin at first on full screen and then eventually narrowed it down to sections just above the words.

Mayflower: You are correct there is either 128 or 129 denticles... I was just hoping there was an easier way to identify the large versus the small ones as the pics from the catalog are hard for me to decipher the difference.
I think it's safe to assume that all the coins in question are large denticles unless someone can show me otherwise...

As a PS, I am so pleased with this recent coin back from PCGS. So far this is the only MS coin certified by PCGS. I know there are a number of ICCS MS coins out there, though I have not seen a nicer one myself. Potentially the finest there is.

I think #5 might be A to small denticle variety, quite scare in mint state condition.

Funny you say that b/c I thought that was a large dent. penny... #15 however I was hoping was an A to small denticle.
Ugh my eyes are playing tricks on me...

Photos can be very tricky. Try taking a picture with Gratia at the top with no shadows on Gratia. Try cutting that portion and then putting it on top of a similar photo from one that is a large denticle like 6 or 8. It will probably tell the tale.

Look at the gap between the denticles... if the 'I' from GRATIA looks like it could slide right up and fit in between the denticles, then you likely have a small denticles variety...

That's a good way to look at it.. I'll try that tonight perhaps when I get the chance...

I will also be taking these to my LCS to confirm my best guess I suppose.. I will let everyone know the results..
