It's really too bad there are twice as many posts in the discouraged sellers forum as there are in the recommended sellers...

That doesn't necessarily equate to more bad sellers than good. Many of the listings for bad sellers are "multiples". Their feedback got so bad they changed ebay IDs, but not selling styles.

And the recommended list doesn't contain very many "OK" sellers, just the ones that are in the top 5%. I've had many positive ebay transactions ... coin was as described, shipping was reasonable, etc. But I reserve my entries in that forum to those who consistently go above and beyond (all of the above are true, plus they communicate by initially thanking you for your purchase, give you shipping info, package the item very well, and if you have a concern, they resolve it quickly).

Not all ebay sellers are bad. I know that this listing is about "Not Doing Business" with certain individuals but I want to share two different stories that happened to me.

First one, I purchased a 1970 mint set from a lady in Virginia, sellers name escapes me at this time. When the package arrived it was in an envelope like you would ship a letter in. Guess what, back of the envelope was ripped open and the set was gone. I couldn't figure out by the name on the return address just exactly who I bought from as I had two items coming from different sellers in the same area. I contacted the first one and got lucky, I explained what had happened and possibly to head off other issues like that I suggested a change in packaging. She said that I was the first one that it happened to. I believe the total sale was a whopping $7.50, postage included in price, so It really wasn't worth my time to persue a refund or open a complaint. I had basically wrote it off to a lesson learned. GUESS WHAT!!! This lady sent me another 1970 mint set in different shipping material (padded) and didn't even ask for more money. That is customer service.

Second story involved a Barber half dollar for my collection. The mint I need was from New Orleans. I always pay within seconds of an auction ending, do not want to tie up the process anymore than I have to. Long story short, the coin arrives in a padded mailer. It was not in a flip, it was not in tissue it was merely thrown into the package, sealed and mailed. To top everything else off, it came from San Fransico not New Orleans. I wrote back to the seller and complained about the packaging and the wrong mint coin that was shipped. I also stated that the coin that was sent was worth at least $20.00 dollars more than the one I was seeking. I got a flippant response back that said, "Send Me $20.00 dollars more then and I could careless what you think of the way I ship items. Well, Negative marks all the way. Two days later I get a message from the seller. HE had been out of town and let his wife run his ebay business in his absence. He wholeheartedly apologized about the mistake, said keep the coin, mailed me the correct coin and refunded me the shipping costs from the original auction. Now this was based on me asking ebay to remove the Negative. I agreed as he did have a 99.9% rating but he had to initiate the removal not me.

Those are the only two "Bad" dealings I have ever had on ebay and both were handled in exemplary manner. Guess I am just a lucky individual at this point.

Do not buy from an ebay seller named mrbig123. He isn't a big seller and may not have any other items up sale in future. He had three auctions for coins and notes he didn't have. Tried to get at least one buyer to pay outside of ebay, likely so they wouldn't get refunded. Gave a different excuse to each buyer as to why he didn't have the item - lost, stolen, etc. and failed to issue refund. Now just waiting on complaint to ebay to go though their time-frame to get money back.

I refuse to deal any longer with ebay dealer "colonialacrescoins" in Canada.
They may have a ton of FB but my experiences with them have been dreadful - and they are a major dealer in Canada too!
Twice they reneged on auctions claiming the coin was "already sold" when I won at a low price.
Another shipment never made it here to the USA.
The one shipment I did receive was nothing special but took several WEEKS to arrive. The mailing date was a full 15 days after I paid!
Their idea of communication is practically no communication at all, although filing a PayPal complaint seems to arouse them from their torpor.

Here's another one: coinedout. This seller has been on the list since 7/2009. Here's a recent interaction with him that shows some people never change....

This caution is for VAMmers. I had a less than satisfactory exchange with seller dhirsh1149. He cannot attribute Morgan VAMs. He claims an older gentleman does his attributing without compensation. He was also outted on another forum. The coin was decently graded and problem-free but the attribution was so far off it was laughable (1880-P VAM 50A attributed as a VAM 8). Small photos make on-line attribution near impossible.

If you just want the coin, go ahead. If you are after the variety, forget it.

Seller dmkdrgn88 never shipped the item I won and hasn't responded to any of my messages. They have both positive and negative feedback since then, so I know they weren't hit by a bus or something.

crispy1967 is another to add to the list of deal with at your own risk. She intentionally used a false photo/description and only when it was proven that the photo was 'borrowed' and a completely different series/denomination of coin than what was sent was she finally willing to work out a refund.

Seller: larrymo

Sends an email after you've won his auctions asking if you'd like to add delivery confirmation, and/or signature/insurance, for additional costs to the order. Also offers to take a personal check by mail for payment.

The package arrived with Delivery Confirmation anyway, so if you pay for that you get nothing extra for that option.

The onus is on the seller to get the coin to you and charge what they need ( as described in the ad ) to get that done and cover their end.

"We buy and sell Canadian coin collection both personal and estate. We have over 10 years of experience in the numismatic business. Our coins are evaluated with the strictest and most conservative grading company, ICCS. -Nous parlons également francais-"

Discouraged-Sellers

Seller left me a vulgar and profane message in my messages after I politely inquired about a coin I bought for .95 cents and had not yet received.
The CCF rules don't allow me to post the profanity here and I wouldn't repeat it if I could.
I called ebay and they were informed and promised to take care of this activity on the sellers part.
I opened a case to get my money back for an item not received.
The money was quickly refunded.

This morning I got this invoice.
I called ebay again. This seller should be history.
I am sure that he will return under a new sellers name.
I'll follow up if he does.

Discouraged-Sellers

I just got a request for payment and the price has gone up! I will be getting on the phone now with Paypal.

Discouraged-Sellers

All this over a .95 cent nickel.
