I refuse to vote for this out of principal.
I am getting sick and tired of all the commemorative circulation coins; I like the "base" circulation loon, Caribou ect coins over all these stupid variants...
But hey, I'm just one voice.

"The launch of the My Canada, My Inspiration program calling on Canadians to submit designs for every coin denomination circulating in 2017 during Canada's 150th anniversary. Over 10,000 entries were received and more than one million Canadians voted online to select the winning designs which will be revealed in 2017." http://www.mint.ca/store/news/news-....VzHg4NTOerV

Only the new My Canada designs will be in circulation. The regular coins will be available in sets only so they should be relatively scarce. Good news, bad news I guess.

To everyone complaining about "childish designs"... this contest was only open to children 12 and under.

I don't think the general consensus is that the choices were "childish designs". But on something as small as a nickle plated coin, overly detailed artistry becomes unrecognizable - simple is better. My opinion is that RCM made a huge mistake in not expanding on the 1967 Centennial series including featuring of the symbolism associated to the various creatures that we share our country with. Regardless of age, everyone could relate to that in different ways. What do you mean by "this contest was only open to children 12 and under"?

The RCM is just a microcosm of Canada devolving into a third world state. The meaningless loads of junk that the mint continues to churn is truly amazing! One thing that is reflected on these designs is that Canada 2017 is much much different than Canada 1967. At the risk of getting political , I will leave it at that. Sure hope they do a set in silver and gold of the original Centennial Issue One Cent through Twenty Dollar and the neat Centennial Silver Medal as well. That is one set I would purchase.

If children under 12 were to freely chose 2017 designs without any boundaries, I'd wager the top pick would feature some type of technology, a tablet or cellphone. As far as the voting, it was very telling that RCM did it in the way of a blind/confidential vote rather than in the form of a public engagement/popularity contest. The warmy titles of the chosen selection will likely carry more weight in the final selection than the actual designs. For example, I can see "Birth of a Green Future" to be a sure winner. The "Canadian Icons" would have a large majority of the population going and certainly children 12 and under.

The amount of coins and the mintages coming along with it borderlines on the ridiculous. It's getting to the point that with the exception of a few, most of the coins are worth nothing more than bullion within a year of release.

Yes, aside from money wasted on the mass churnings of RCM, I think the entire paradigm of what is coin (money) is also shifting over time. It used to represent something very important - the ability to put food on the table, have a decent place to live, pay for children's education. To the older generation, using credit or surviving on handouts was the ultimate of shameful. I don't quite understand the change, maybe it's because we've begun to believe "the government" is ultimately responsible for our livelihood and well-being instead, but it seems RCM, especially by the fantasy themes, is at work to actively demean the significance of what money represents as well.

One question: will the 50 cent piece be minted with its regular design (coat of arms)? There are only 5 categories and six coins.

According the RCM's news release, there's no indication of what's planned other than the special design of the five. OTTAWA, ONTARIO, MARCH 11, 2015 - To celebrate Canada's upcoming 150th anniversary, the Royal Canadian Mint is inviting Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast to design the 5-cent, 10-cent, 25-cent, one-dollar and two-dollar coins that will circulate in 2017. http://www.mint.ca/store/news/royal....V7ivJnjOerU

Without getting into the politics and "PC" angle, the RCM has used these contests many times in the past to generate interest in upcoming coins. Personally, I'm still hoping for new issues using the 1967 designs.
