Can you really find silver in half dollar rolls? Or is it just sheer luck?

Yep, you can find silver in half dollar rolls. Yep, it is just sheer luck (volume, volume, volume)

A box of halves is $500. Often, folks go through several boxes without finding silver. Sometimes folks find several silver pieces in a single box. See almost 1300 pages of such discussion at https://goccf.com/t/22710&whichpage=1285

Like others have mentioned, the key is volume searching. I consider at least $1,000 per week to be small volume. I remember back around 2010, and higher silver prices, $10,000 per week might have been considered higher volume per individual roll hunters. Companies such as Jackson metals back then might have been processing hundreds of thousands of dollars in halves per week.

I have gone through 65 boxes of half dollars and found no silver at all. I honest to God do not know how some of these guys on here pull silver on a daily basis. It really must be something about areas where we all live. If you go for silver in halves, all I can say is good luck. I gave up after so much heartbreak.

I have only searched a handful of half boxes. The first one I ever searched gave up 3 90% and about a dozen 40%. After wasting a considerable amount of time and effort on a few consecutive skunk boxes, I realized that I did not have the time, money, or pickup/dump network to make it a worthwhile venture. I still pick up loose halves as they are available, but I have only gotten 1 more 40% that way. Given the number of spikes in the silver spot price, I think it is safe to say that every silver half dollar has been pulled at least once. I know several people who dumped buckets of 40% halves back into circulation after the Hunt Brothers incident in the 80s, and a former coworker of mine spent a fair number in ca. 2008 when the silver price started to take a dive. 90% halves only enter circulation by accident. You can thank the mortality of coin collectors paired with relatives who are too lazy to do a quick Google search on the coins they just inherited.

I try to do 2K a week aka 4 boxes....3 weeks ago I did well and the week after not well....it's all luck and volume.....I live in a highly populated area in NY 60 miles from NYC so people likely don't know what they have and throw them back into circulation

It DOES take commitment, time (a lot), and patience. When I was roll searching for them I was amazed some could still be found, but the reality of it being hit and miss comes home pretty fast when you go through several weeks with nothing. One other thing to remember is that most of the ones you will find are the 40% silver halves. Which at present is 2.15 of silver or a "profit" of $1.65. Don't quit your day job Its fun for the hobby aspect.

I'm actually not entirely sure where you guys are at? Silver halves for me at least are very common its weird to go a week without finding at least one 40%, I prolly go through about $2000 a week maybe. I've been searching for several months and have tubes full of halves. Crh is very very good to me now metal detecting lol that's a different story. Quarters are the ones that are very hard to find.

You have to be committed to the hunt or lucky these days. Halves have been so picked over that finding silver is rare. Those silver pieces found are usually the result of "new" silver being reintroduced to the system by the unknowing, uncaring or thieves.
If you want to really get into it the actual cash investment is not that bad. You need to be able to spare a couple thousand dollars for the duration of the search. Subtract from this any coins you keep after the search. Chances are that the coins you keep are going to be worth considerably more than the price you paid.
What is more expensive is the time and effort expended. You need to have a bank or supplier of raw coins as well as a way to dump the vast majority of them. If you can dump them loose for face value then there is little direct cost. If you need to roll or bag them then consider the costs of the materials.
Next, factor in the value of your time, and other indirect costs such as transportation and bribery of your bank friends.
If you are in it to make money than you will most likely be disappointed. If you are in it for the fun then you will have a blast.

My system is simple. I have an account at a local credit union from when I was a little kid through my parents, they have 2 local branches within 10 minutes from my house...Each branch has a coin machine that doesn't give a fee if your a member but deducts 20% if your a non member. I was dumping all the halves at 1 branch but was told I had to limit it to $1000 per week or I would be charged a fee, so I do 1/2 at 1 branch and 1/2 at the other branch. I get my 4 boxes from a Key Bank near my job, hoping for some good finds this week since last week I didn't get anything because the woman who orders them was away, that'll be this Thursday afternoon. I may also get 3 boxes from a friend for a small silver fee for him possibly Friday depending on how well I do Thursday. It is worth the gamble giving him 1 90% and 1 40% per box since I could easily find more than a few per box. Have fun with the hunt and hope you score.

I'd bet it varies by location. The more roll searchers in the same area might be going through the same coins over the course of a year or so. But if you are the only one searching a particular area, you might pick up on some that has been sitting in the back of the vault.
My cousin is a bank teller but I won't say which state and she said that there is a roll hunter who searches one coin in particular in her area and that he is always grumpy so sometimes her co-workers save the coins he returns and just give them back to him the next time he comes. So I guess maybe be really nice to them and they won't do this to you?
