I've been purchasing a few morgans here and there for the past couple months now. I've been contemplating purchasing a more expensive morgan. My budget would be about 300. I'm just torn between a MS63 or higher DMPL (I've got a 80-S in 64DMPL) or a high grade common date such as an 80-S in MS66 or a 65+. I really like the DMPL I have now, but I also think a MS66 would be pretty amazing as well. My LCS has an 80-S in 66 and I believe he's asking 300 or so for it. I did pay a bit shy of 400 for the DMPL, and wouldn't mind possibly bumping my budget up to 350 for a nice DMPL....
Another thing is if I want a DMPL before the 2016 FUN show, I'd have to buy online and I'm not so sure on that. My LCS doesn't have any DMPLs and they are relatively hard to come by around me.
I guess I'm just asking if you had the opportunity to spend around 300 on a Morgan, would you get a nice high MS common date, or a 64DMPL?

Good question. I'd say either or... It all boils down to the coin itself and the choices available when I want to buy it.

If you are considering collecting PL or DMPL, you should use the internet as your selection and pricing will be better. If you already have a 80-S DMPL, I would not buy the 80-S 66 from your LCS as I would look for another date. You also need to consider PL as many of the PL coins can be close to DMPL. I would go with the PL or DMPL, but those are my favorite coins.

Rest in Peace

I would also suggest a different date S mint PL or DMPL but bottom line is be picky because there are enough to choose from and all are not equal.

Thank you all for the opinions, I think I'll just wait until the FUN convention and look for a DMPl/PL there!
I'll post pics when I make the final decision

Since you already have a DMPL Morgan, I would suggest getting a MS-66 piece. I personally would choose the DMPL coin. Make sure to post pics of the coin when you get it!

$300 for an 80-s in 66 is a little over what I'd pay for it, unless it has something that stands out as particularly attractive. Maybe some toning? For a blast white, I think I'd wait for one bit cheaper at 66.

I, personally, would get the DMPL since I don't own one. In your case I would get the MS.

DMPL coins being substantially scarcer than MS coins, it's not a question for me. DMPL all the way.

1880-S are a dime a dozen in MS66, and you'll not regret taking the same money and buying a 63 DMPL 1883 or 1884 CC dollar instead.

They have jumped from $350-$400 to $450-$500 over the past few months, which appears out of the original posters budget. He could probably find a dog of a 64, but I would never recommend buying an overgraded coin. 63DMPL is likely the upper limit with his budget.

Given his $300 budget, I would go for a fully reflective MS65PL 1879-S.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I think I'll be waiting until the FUN show, because at the Summer FUN show I had the opportunity to buy an 1885-P in 64DMPL for right at 300. I think I could possible find a common date 64DPL for around 300. I'll also search for a 65PL that may be close to the same price.. I've noticed ebay sellers charge quite a premium for DPL coins

If you buy a 64DMPL/DPL for $300, odds are it's going to be a lackluster coin. I own several 64DMPL's, and have found that there is a direct correlation between quality and price with them. My nicest is an 1881-S with 12+ inch mirrors and contrast that looks like a proof, and I paid a slight premium for that one at $400 a couple years ago.

Another piece of advice when it comes to DMPL/DPL's. The older holders are generally not true DMPL's any longer. They were far more lenient with the designation 10+ years ago than they are today. Try to find one in a more recent holder.

I agree somewhat with what you're saying Cartwheelcollector. However, the 80-S I purchased at the Summer FUN show was the best 64DMPL I saw on the floor that day. I walked the floor around 3 times looking at every single DMPL there (only about 15) and the 80-S was the strongest DMPL I found. Being a YN, the dealer did give me the wholesale price. It is also in a newer style PCGS slab with a green bean.
