At what time, in our recent history, did wheat cents become something that people hoarded? Old clad dimes and quarters have been in circulation for fifty years, and are not worth anything. It seems that wheats have been collected for decades now! Edited by MichioKaku 09/11/2015 10:11 am

Coin boards for wheat cents came about in the 1930's, so I will say then.

At what time were they actually worth something?

Wheats denote a pre 1959 penny, so they would be from the pre-clad era. Seeing the wheats on the back is an indication that it is an old penny without having to check the date.

I'm not sure there's a definitive answer to your question. Many wheaties to this day aren't worth more than a few cents. 1909S VDBs have been valuable since they were issued, IIRC, due to hoarding and low mintage. Next to scarcity, condition, is, of course, very important.

I've been collecting them since the 70's from pocket change. Still only have a couple hundred of them.

Remer that it was the first coin to feature a US President so technically they have been collectible since day 1

Well, wheat cents became collectible when I was about 8 years old. I didn't collect them before that.
Oh, you mean for *everybody*!? Then I must agree with the discussion above.

I am drawing the connection that the wheat cents, even from the 1950s, were beginning to be collected around 1970...

I remember meeting an American collector in 1976 who saved Wheat Cents.

I would also point out that collectible does not necessarily mean valuable. I keep virtually every wheatie I find, even though almost all of them I've pulled are not valuable in any appreciable way. They're collectible, though not valuable, because I go out of my way to collect them, for whatever reason it is that motivates me.

Quote: ..because I go out of my way to collect them, I do too! I don't know why though. I have lots of wheats from the teens to the fifty's but, whenever I find any I keep them been doing it a long time.

I've been collecting , saving , and hoarding wheat cents since 1961. It's what we DO . No, I don't work for GEICO .
