I just wanted to post this phenomenal U.S. rarity as it has been an exciting ride for not only me but the owner of the coin and other collectors who knew of the surfacing of this new coin. I have been very lucky to not only witness the purchase of this early CC treasure which has been stashed away for what I imagine to have been a VERY long time but to also experience the nail biting excitement of waiting for this coin to be certified and sent back to Canada. I have had the privilege to not only see this coin in person but to have held it raw and certified in my hands multiple times and I can not describe the amazing rush it feels to hold such a significant piece in my own two hands! I want to clarify that I am not trying to advertise this (not to say some of you may be seriously interested) nor am I receiving money for posting this but to only make it known that this coin is proof that things are still out there to be discovered. I would also like to add that the seller of this coin received a large amount and was very happy. I present to you a coin that is not only new to the market but is of absolute rarity and of top quality for the grade assigned with no traces of cleaning or anything else but minor waer from the American people who used this piece as currency over one hundred years ago. Did I mention the majority of the collection this was in was cleaned Canadian scrap and that this was one of the only items that had not been assaulted by a thorough scrubbing! http://www.ebay.ca/itm/USA-1878-CC-...i=RTM2067267Feel free to call me Will.

I am surprised it survived in that good of shape. Most CC half eagles went right to California and circulated heavily.
I know the feeling, dollar man. I actually got to hold and view a 1870-CC double eagle a while back. Only about 50 known to exist.

Yes, first year. The coin was worth right around $350K or so.

Nice coin! I've been able to pick up a few cc gold pieces but none that are under 10K mintage.

"absolute rarity"? That's a really ambitious asking price. Suggest you take the first offer over 10K you get.

There were over 9000 of these minted. How is it an "absolute rarity?"
Don't get me wrong -- it's a beautiful coin and I'd love to own it. I just think that overstating the rarity of this coin is not really necessary.
You do realize you're asking $20,000 for an XF45 example when low to mid AU examples that have come on the market have been selling for 13-18k? This one doesn't even have a CAC bean.

7 to 8 K wholesale would be tops. Decent coin for sure.

A rare coin to be sure, but Heritage does sell a couple of these per year on average. Prices have ranged from $7-9000 for XF-40 and $13-16,000 for AU-50, so this piece should fall somewhere in between these ranges.
Apparently there are only 2 mint state pieces known. There is a big spread in pricing for the available AU-58 coins, with Heritage sale prices ranging from $25,000 to $63,000 over the last 10 years. I presume a really high-end coin would offer a big profit motive if it could be re-certified as mint state; maybe that hope is what drove that $63,000 auction in 2011.

The title to the post is super deceiving. It has been seen before, multiple times in this grade at auction.
Although I own multiple $5 Liberty Heads in various P & S from the 19th Century, I am unfamiliar with the true rarity of the CC issues.
Having looked at the HA history on this coin, yes, its nice, but I don't think this is in the territory when stating "is of absolute rarity".
"Absolute rarity" is a different animal than this coin in the realm of Numismatics. You're talking 1 or 2 or even 5 known in ALL grades. What you've got here is a great coin, with a great story and you're certainly privileged to have the front row seat you do.
Regarding "top quality for the grade assigned". It needs a CAC approval for that in today's market.
If your seller wants cash it's not happening with a BIN of $20K on the bay. You're going to either sit on this for another 10 years to get near that number or you're going to take the first $12.5K offer that comes your way. You go to auction with this, it could hit the moon for sure but that's a gamble you're going to have to take.
Thanks for sharing. Good luck.
