Just thought I'd get a couple dollar coins from ebay. I am appalled by the quality of this years dollars. I just got P&D coins of LBJ and Ike and they are all spotty and have undesirable dark spots/hazing. Are the mint set coins any better? I think the seller could have put a little more effort making sure the coins were nice looking rather than popping any coin into the package.

Mint set 2015 Presidential dollars will be of very good quality. It's the dollar coins sold in bags, boxes and rolls that have seen quality drop in recent years. I had a dealer show me rolls of Truman dollars with dark water spots on them and a completely brown Eisenhower Presidential dollar straight from the roll. My guess is the Mint sees these as a low priority with regards to quality.

I guess that is a way for the mint to make you spend extra $$$ on an overpriced mint set to get quality coins and not the bagged and rolled junk of dollar coins.

Nope, just really quick, dark toning unfortunately. And as for getting burned on buying Presidential dollars on ebay, I'd recommend buying from a seller who posts good pictures of the actual coin(s) you will receive. Or, better yet, buy them at a coin show or coin store where you can inspect them and pick out the best.

Unfortunately most sellers use stock photos or not very good pics for the dollar coins. So you really don't know what your getting. And I don't have any local coin shops here. Shows? Not usually any around my area.

I have the proof frosted set, and wished I had bought the unfrosted. But these are nice, just the "UN" frosted ones show much better detail. I bought off ebay as it was cheaper than the US Mint! And the coins were perfect! The seller had great stock pics, but he is well known and has great feed back. He had purchased a large number of sets, fresh from the mint. Had any of the coins any problems, I would and could have returned. So get good pics, and a good dealer, I assume you got a refund?

jbuck, didn't you mention that you collected the proof dollars instead of the Denver and Philly dollars? Seems like an easier alternative to the business strike counterparts.

Yes, I only collect the proof dollars. With the date and mint are on the edge, there is no point in collecting more than one per year to put in an album. Since I do buy proof sets (but not mint sets) I already have the proof dollars to use.
