Didn't the mint use Priority Mail in the past? Now they are using FedEx smartpost! Coins shipped 9/11 and it's estimated arrival is 9/18. Funny they're not using their own agency for shipping.

Smartpost means FedEx will get it to your local post office for final delivery. Initial tracking may say seven days, but my orders are typically here in three or four.

I'm not a fan of smartpost. I have ordered other things via that method and they took forever and a day to get here. Tracking says it has arrived at the post office but doesn't say out for delivery yet. Have a box across the street.

Not a fan of Smartpost either, wish they stuck with Priority Mail.

I am sure success will depend on your local post office. I have seen complaints about delays in the many C&C threads. I suppose I have been fortunate.

May I offer some clarification?
SmartPost doesn't necessarily mean the USPS will deliver the package. Once the package is in transit, once it reaches "Final Mile" status, a calculation is done to see if it's better for FedEx or USPS to take it on the "final mile" to your location.
Also, FedEx has been a USPS Government Contractor for years. They haul USPS Priority Mail packages regularly. Also, if you look at "Priority Mail Express" rates, keep an eye out for the "Fedex" logo in small font near those prices. :)
The biggest surprise to me is that the Mint is using FedEx. The rest of the U.S. Government is mandated to use UPS or USPS as of four years or so ago through some intensive lobbying that UPS did in Congress.

SmartPost definitely takes longer where I live. If I spent enough on each order to qualify for UPS delivery, I'd be broke.

I cannot imagine FedEx ever being cheaper for the final mile. I can walk to the PO and back from my house. For what it is worth, I can probably walk to the FedEx distribution center from work. I have often tracked packages that were not delivered (signature required) and stopped by FedEx to get them on the way home. All I need is the tracking number and my ID.

Probably because the Mint is self funded and doesn't receive appropriations from Congress.
